Did you actually like this?

This adaption was ok but it seems rubbish if you compare it too the TV adaption ITV did in 2001 starring Charles Dance,Sophia Myles,James D'Arcy Gregor Fisher and Pam Ferris. The 2001 version is totally true to the original book whereas this version i feel has left out half the story. The Nicholas here had two emotions- crying and getting angry. The other Nicholas is Sooooo handsome! He's a much better actor. The one with blonde hair was fat, too, and bad big blubbery lips. Yuck. Sophia Myles is a much better actress and portrayed the scenes where she was harrassed by the old man excellently.Although Romola Garai was ok she was so not how i imagined Kate while reading the book.Anne Hathaway did not suit this part at all!!!

reply

anne hathaway doesnt suit any part

The James D'Arcy version was much, much better. I was disappointed with this version's Nicholas. His accent wasn't convincing at all. He seemed very awkward and his bleach blond hair was distracting. I usually like Anne Hathaway in most of her roles but she seemed out of place in this part.

See the James D'Arcy version instead. That had superior acting, perfectly plotted, perfectly cast actors and takes its time telling the story. This newer version just seems too rushed to do the story justice.

reply

yeah but wasnt that a series? of course it wouldnt be as rushed

reply

True, but there were other factors other than it feeling rushed that make the James D'Arcy version better. Again, see my comments above. Casting the roles makes a huge difference in any film/tv series. If the actors don't feel right for the roles, then the audience doesn't get pulled in. I felt that way with Charlie Hunnam and Anne Hathaway. They just didn't fit right for me.

Charles Dickens, the Brontes and Jane Austens' books have been adapted many times but various filmmakers. One filmmaker usually does a better job than the rest. In my opinion, as far as Nicholas Nickleby is concerned, the one with JD did it best.

i really loved it and nothing will change that. I like Sophia Myles as Isolde and thats it.

Thought it started out really bad but about half way through I actually started to like the film, the funny thing is I hate these type of films

From Serenity:Define interesting...Oh God, oh God,we're all going to die?

reply

I absolutely hated this movie. It was a complete waste of my time. I was really expecting to like and my friend really liked it but I thought it was awful. So anyways I thought I would vent to ppl who actually know what I am talking about.

reply

Yep. It's a charming adaptation. "Fat"? "Bad big blubbery lips"? You're just saying nonsense to defend your nonsensical point of view, right? You can't simply express your preference for another version (as if it's necessary to choose one).

If you really want fidelity to the book, surely you'd prefer the video of the RSC stage version. Or is that Nicholas too skinny?

reply

Of course, because how an actor LOOKS means that they can AAAACT.

I saw this last night and thought that it was well done. I haven't read the book, though I intend to, nor seen the other version.

Charlie Hunnam was cute, and Jamie Bell's acting was very good. I didn't like the Anne Hathway portion at all. I think it would have been better without romance, and likewise with the sister, it felt like a huge part was missing.

I thought Smike and Nickleby had the most chemisty out of anyone, to the point where it would have been better if they had been gay, rather than making Smike fall in love with Kate. I'm merely discussing the movie here, not the actual novel, as the character depiction is probably quite different.

This movie was great. It has become one of my favorites! I really didn't know I would enjoy a Charles Dickens movie nor have I read much, if any from him. So from someone who has not read the tale, the movie was beautiful and I loved all the characters. Nicholas was cute. hehee. God bless.

I did like this version of Nicholas Nickelby. I haven't seen the one you mention, ITV version, but I would imagine a mini-series, which is given a lot more screen time, to inevitably be better.

For a 2-hour movie, this worked very well. Of course, it cuts a lot of the characters and some of the small details out, but it's a very well done representation of the major plot points of the Dickens novel.

Now of course, when you have a mini-series, you're going to have a lot more time dedicated to present the whole entire novel. For instance, Pride and Prejudice. The BBC/A&E miniseries I thought to be far superior to the movie, due to the fact that if followed the book almost faithfully, was superbly casted (yes I even liked the casting of Mrs. Bennett), but, most importantly had almost 5 hours of screen time, vs. the movie version with Keira Knightley which was given about two-and-a-half hours.

reply

Yes, I actually liked it.

It's almost been two years since you posed that question, but I only got to see the feature last night, and i was pleasantly surprised. I have not read the novel, nor have I seen the 2001 television adaption, and they may very well be better. (most likely as to the novel).

Coming from where I am from, the feature films I most often get to see are Scandinavian or American in Origin, British movies have a tendency to disspaear in the mass of American movies, especially at the cinema here in "no-mans-land". So, when I get hold of DVD's I watch them.

I found this movie looking through other titles starring Anne Hathaway, I was a little dissapointed that her role was not bigger, nor more colourful, but I to y surprise I found other actors I can like aswell!

And if you reference Charles Hunnam as being "fat" I don't know which world you live in. Jamie Bell I have not seen in several years until recently when I saw "jumper" at the cinema. He seem to have grown, not just as a person, but as an actor. and I admire that!

I generally liked this movie. and I will recommend it to my friends. if I will come to read the novel, who knows? I do enjoy a good book, but sadly my only reference to Charles Dickens is through a Doctor Who episode, and a christmas calendar my parents had when I was a child, in which each Advent day had a small part of his "A Christmas Carol" on it.
