Alfred Molina

Alfred Molina (who according to the audio commentary watched speeches of sect leaders for preparation) as Johann Tetzel and his scenes preaching for indulgence in Wittenberg and Magdeburg stole the whole show. Does anyone agree?

I think Alfred always steals the show! :)

Alfred Molina said in the commentary that he watched "American evangelical Christian TV" in preparing the role of Tetzel. If you're an American or even if you're not, you probably know the kind preachers I mean: fundamentalist, "Bible thumpers" of the Pat Robertson type. Anyway, I think Molina's Tetzel seemed amazingly sincere. Tetzel is a figure who when portrayed could easily be a stereotypical villian; but with Molina he was a man who really believed in what he was doing (however misguided it was), who was not doing it for material gain only. The natural softness and kindness of Molina's face, I feel, played a big part in how his Tetzel came across.
