One of the stupidest scenes I've ever seen in a period piece

When rebellious Protestants are burning a cathedral and Luther steps up to stop them.

The whole scene made me laugh at its ridiculousness. In between the hilarious facial expressions and rantings of Luther, you've got his former friend screaming "The people's work!" four or five times with pauses in between for 'additional impact'. It was so bad it was hilarious.

That was a ridiculous scene. What I want to know is why the director was happy with that take.

We saw this film in History class in Grade 12, and that scene lasted with me so long that for the rest of that semester, I'd spontaneously yell "The People's Work!" at my friend in that class.

lol yes

There is some ridiculousness to the scene (the whole scenario seems very much "made for film"), but I've always read the "people's work!" part as Carlstadt's desperate attempt to convince himself it was so... as everyone else just quietly watches him go away.
The question is, is that what the makers meant by it?

"There is Robinson, alone on lone island - but they will marry."

marmota-b: I think you're probably right.

One problem with the scene, I think, is that Joseph Fiennes is not very good at shouting; even in anger, he's usually so soft-spoken that on the rare occasion when he does raise his voice he sounds unnatural. The other problem is that, IMO, the actor who plays Carlstadt is relatively poor.
