Any homosexual connotation?

Question marks around my head if homosexual connotation was embedded in the original Dutch TV series during 1966-68? Can anyone tell? Tons of thanks.

Originally the writer of the serie (annie mg schmidt) liked if the neigbour had a bit of gay manners. Just like in the movie the song about the boys of the travel club (jongens van de reisvereniging) was about more than just friendship :). The actor who played opa of the original serie was also a gay in real life. And wouter the barber was played by an openly gay in the original serie just like in the movie. There have been gay like rolls. For that time this was very unique (not only) in holland.

My mother have seen the original serie and she said that it looked a lot like the movie. So the filmmakers have done a great job. It was something the whole country stayed home for. It originally was meant to be a kids serie but it was enjoyed by every age. I enjoyed the movie too and its a shame that theres only one episode left of this legendary serie, and i will never be able to see the rest.

Funny how you over looked the numerous scenes of actors wearing very little more than tight underpants ( Gerrit in paricular.) Interestingly enough, there are no scenes of actresses in similar states of undress. It is very one sided.

I wonder if the charater of the hair dresser was originally intended to be gay-positive or a stereotype, given the period in which the TV series was made. As well as it was handled in the movie, I could see the original character as just another screen sissy on TV.

Question: I it common to have sinks in one's bedroom in the Netherlands? The landlord/neighbor has a sink in his bedroom. One would never see this in the US other than a University dorm room or a very cheap hotel.

In answer to your question: it is not common, but yes: sometimes you see it. At my parents' house there is one bedroom with a sink in it. But in my house there are none.

I don't know if it is common or not, but in my wife's parent's house, all three bedrooms have a sink. It is a pretty modern house, too. Of course, they have a small closet on the ground floor with a toilet and sink, and a larger bathroom with a washer, shower, toilet and sink on the second floor. It was weird, and hard to get used to.

As for the homosexual connotations... I thought it odd that my DVD was distributed by an obviously gay distribution company. I didn't see anything gay about the movie, at all (except it is a musical ;) )

Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so.

Ja Zuster was shown at Frameline (San Francisco's Gay film festival) where Loes Luca led the audience in a rousing chorus of the theme song. It seems as though the distributor was aware that the Gay market would find the movie interesting.

There doesn't seem to be much of a Subtitled Dutch Musicals market in the US otherwise.

What is the big deal? When I view threads in this forum (by example threads about Alexander or even about this movie) it is about the question if there are any homosexual references. I don't see the big deal or even the problem about it. Why is it so important? It is just part of the story! In Dutch cinema's there is now showing a film called Gay, and it is about...

I am from the fifties and I don't remember it from the time when the series were on air in the sixties; maybe it was there and I didn't pick it up, or it was just very subtle - but who cares.

And yes, Annie M.G. Schmidt was open-minded and yes some of the actors are gay - so what? Drawing a straight line from there is like falling into the good old
biographical fallacy. The original series was about a bunch of weirdos (a nerd, a criminal and a very funny grandpa - whom you wanted to be yours) and very funny - you stayed at home for that. Unfortunately most of the original material was lost: the Ampex tapes (very costly and you know whta Dutch is about) were simply re-used for other purposes.

it's not about homosexual things, it's about being OPEN MINDED to ALL people!
that's much how Annie (the writer) herself regarded life (due to a too strickt upbringing?)

Anyways, I now have my little girl watch it and she loves it, not the least bit offended by any of the characters.

And Dutch homes, build in the 50s & 60s came with sinks in bedrooms. Since some lacked bathrooms; space was needed to room people or the many kids they had in those times.
