In Halo 1 a plasma pistol and an assualt rifle are my favourites. I haven't played Halo 2 but hypothetically I would own with two plasma pistols or a plasma pistol and an battle rifle. I can fire the plasma pistol really fast.

Plasma rifle and needler
I fire the plasma rifle till it over heats then switch to the needler and unoad it and then switch back to the plasma rifle to overheat it again. Guaranteed kill or kills. Just depends on how many enemies are in front of you.

Wow I don't even remember posting on this and I definitly don't remember liking the shotgun.
Anyway halo 1 is fine but currently my halo 2 is
Dual SMG and pistol I seriously own with that combo.
And maybe a sword as a secondary.
And now for something completly different.A man with three buttocks.

-Plasma Pistol
-Shotgun + Snuper Rifle
Halo 2
-Beam Rifle
-Beam Rifle/Battle Rifle + Energy Sword

For me it depends on the situation. And this is for CE only, since I haven't played 2 in forever, and probably won't get my hands on it again any time soon.
Covenant only
Usually Pistol + Plasma Rifle, though I'll sometimes switch Pistol for Sniper Rifle if I feel that I'll have a good long distance opportunity.
Flood only
Assault Rifle+Shotgun and while the Rifle may be replaced with anything, Shotty always stays by my side for those pesky combat forms.
Covenant and Flood (and Forerunners)
Plasma Rifle+ Shotgun because I find that both are potentially the most powerful close-medium combat weapons available, and since the Elites don't like their own medicine and the Forerunners aren't prepared for plasma weapony and because the Shotgun pawns all Flood (it's even easier to melee infection forms with Shotty) this is my ultimate and most frequent combo.
Also, the Shotty pawns Banshees in 1-2 shots if you lure them into trying to ram you, which is epic win.
