nancy / barbara's monologue

When she confesses she's Nancy, how many takes did that take? That was really long... and ewan's look at the end is simply priceless.

This is heavy, Doc.

It says in the trivia section that it took 6 shots. It would have taken me 60! :]

I know a thing about contrition, because I've got enough to spare.

Takes, not shots.

haha ewan's look made me laugh out loud. It was perfect!

Today 4 U, tomorrow for me

What is that, maybe a 5 minute dialogue? That musta been so hard for Renee to remember all that. It was so funny though, especially the look on Ewan's face, downright funny, man.

reply

I know! I'd be stunned if I found out that someone did something like that to get my attention.

reply

Its almost 3 pages in the book. Which by the way is deffo worth a read, although is exactly like the film (does that ever really happen?) by the author Barbara Novak (Clever!)

reply

It happens when the book is written after the movie.

reply

I would hope she used a teleprompeter, because to memorize all that is CRAZY.

Ewan's face is PRICELESS

i wish the ring had never come to me.

reply

It took 5 takes for her to get it right but they did one more take for "safety" and that is the take they used. Listen to the audio commentaries they are great

reply

great

I did think that it was impressive when I first saw the film - but then I figured that actors in stage plays have to remember whole plays and soliloquies night after night....which makes this scene a little less extraordinary.

reply

the monologues still impressive, even when you've worked on stage. im a renee fan but my jaw dropped when i saw her rapidly pouring out that monologue for over three full minutes.
six takes is less than most actresses spend on a few lines, renee spoke several dozens, and it all looked so easy and natural.

"they should give nicole kidman an oscar for being able to show any emotion after THAT much botox".

reply

The monologue, along with the movie's attitude, was modeled after a stereotypical 1960's film...which usually included lavish apartments, split-screening, and an ending like this. It's hard to explain, but they're very similar.

Mind, Body and Soul

It was amazing, I am not an actor but I know it must be hard to deliver such a monologue like she did. Its not just the words but to be aware of the emotions and expressions too it must be tough. I was certain that I was watching a talented actress after this scene.

reply

Did anyone time it? I rented the movie (I don't own it), so I can't check it myself now. How long was that monologue, exactly?

reply

It lasts 3 minutes and 33 seconds. (1:15:01 - 1:18:34)

reply

But not a lot of movies take their dialogue directly from the book or even stay fairly faithful.

I suspect you were being sarcastic. Can you suspect if I am?

reply

I just watched this scene again and had forgotten how funny it is.

reply

That monologue was brilliant! There's no denying that.
