Ewan miscast

I think he's a great actor but he was the wrong guy for this role. I really liked this film. I didn't go see it when it came out because it looked like a typical Hollywood romantic comedy but it's actually a really funny, clever parody of the Doris Day romantic comedies of the late 50's and early 60's. The only thing that stood out for me was that Ewan was too boyish for the role, it really should have been George Clooney. He seems more like the Rock Hudson/Cary Grant/Rod Taylor type that the role called for.

I thought Ewan was perfect for the part...

I also thought he was somewhat miscast. But he did show a great flair for light comedy that I didn't know he had. Ultimately, he did not detract from my enjoyment of the film.

reply

I thought Ewan was great!

ewwww georrge clooney would have completely ruined the film for me.. he plays the same role the same way in every film

ewan was so charming in this it almost hurt to watch him, LOL he had the suave thing down pat and was completely believable as a man who would get all those women.. he absolutely made me swoon in this film! He also looks damn sharp in those suits, my god! and that smile could melt an igloo, hehe

ewan should not do a documentary about eskimos..

I like George Clooney, but Ewan was Catcher Block. He was drop-dead gorgeous and sexy.

And, no, Ewan should not do a documentary about eskimos. We would have a lot of homeless eskimos.

When was the last time you heard these exact words: You are the sunshine of my life?

reply

Are you crazy?!? This role was made for him! I can't think of anyone who could have done it better, especially not George Clooney! Yuck!

Ewan does look boyish but he's gorgeous and his smoothness and sauveness made him totally believable. Anyways, Catcher is supposed to be gorgeous and charming and Ewan was definitely all that. Can't imagine any other actor doing this part that I would've liked better.

reply

Yeah I too thought Ewan is great in the film. And if you listen to the audio commentaries the director says that Ewan was not his first pick at all and that he wanted someone more Rock Hudsony like george clooney or richard geare(sp?) But Renee suggested Ewan and they did screen tests and they had to choose the best man for the part not the best "looking" man for the part. Ewan even said he wasn't good for the part, he called himself a "wirey scotsman" and no Rock Hudson. :)

reply

Well, maybe someone would have been happy with someone who looked alot like Rock Hudson, but I enjoyed Ewan.

i wish the ring had never come to me.

reply

I thought Ewan was fantastic in this movie. He WAS Catcher Block. He does suave and charming very well, IMHO. He also does two personalities well. I don't know who could have been better, because I thought Ewan was pretty much perfect for it.

EWAN a miscast for this movie?????????? NO ONE could have taken his place. He was perfect. He is all the things most of you said and MORE. The director didn't want a Rock Hudson and I think EWan is much better then Rock could ever be. And, Hugh GRant, NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!George Clooney. UGH UGH!!!! No Ewan was the right choice. Ewan is great in every role that he has played. He just takes on the character and runs with it. He shines in every thing he has done. Movies, Stage and Song. Beautiful voice, AND he is the personification of SEX!!!!!!!! NO, he was NOT a miscast, to be sure.

reply

I found Ewan perfect in the role. Zellweger was miscast.

I think if they were both perfect for this film. They have this chemistry about them and it works in this film. just something about them together in this film(not so much Miss Potter) makes me want to watch it over and over.

reply

Ewan McGregor was perfect for the role! Even right at the start where he slids round the door and does his massive cheeky grin. *swoon* He's absolutely gorgeous as well which definitely helps, when he rips off his shirt...I was about to claw my way towards the screen going 'here, let me help!!!'

i just borrowed the DVD from my school campus and watched it today because of ewan.

when i saw him in this comedy, grinning, the body movement and hair style, i thought i was watching 'jim carrey'.

Ewan's like, my European Ed Norton. He is amazing in any role he takes, "serious" or otherwise!
..And he's damn cute no matter who he plays.

Have you come to make a martyr out of me?

"Zellweger was miscast." In theory, I might agree with you, but in practice, no, she really pulled this movie off.

reply

Ewan was perfect for this movie. This is my all time favourite movie with my all time favourite actor. I melt every time I watch it, mainly because of Ewan. Especially when he is eating that chocolate at the end....oh God what I wouldn't give to be that chocolate.

Ewan was totally believable as the man-about-town, he was young, yes, but it works. He is suave, sexy and no other actor could do a better job IMO. Also love, love, LOVE his Zip accent!!!

What is wrong is that they would NOT have found him that sexy in the early sixties, he's too girlish and effete. The kind of 'pretty boy' metrosexual type women like now. Rock Hudson, gay or not, was far more convincing as a lady's man.

reply

That's exactly what I was trying to say in my original post. Those people disagreeing probably aren't familiar with the Doris Day/Rock Hudson films this movie is parodying. Ethan is the boyish leading man of today, not the manly man of the late 50's.

reply

James Garner could lift Ewan off the ground with one beefy arm and toss him in the trash.

reply

Though I enjoyed Ewan McGregor as Catcher Block and was amazed at his singing voice, he and most male stars of today look boyish. While there are very sexy men today, it is sad that the boyish look predominates and the masculine look has been considerably watered-down from when Rock Hudson, Marlon Brando, etc. were in their prime. Some would consider Brando pretty but he didn't play it that way and those leading men looked hot, mainly because they exuded a powerful masculine look that almost no one captures today. Alas!
