Book/Movie

Based on Michael Connelly's book, I had high expectations for this movie, Blood Work is definitely one of his best book, but this movie, OMG, was so ANNOYING, I Had to stop watching it after 45 mn. I gave it a chance, but I couldn't stand any longer. Follow my advice, I you've read the book, don't bother watchin' it...

IMDB error: for what it worth, Jeff Daniels is Playing Buddy Lockridge, not James Noone.

"Are you askin' me out? that's so cute, what's your name again?"

reply

Sorry, you're wrong. I watched the movie last night. Jeff Daniels plays James "Buddy" Noone.

reply

Only because Clint Eastwood changed who the killer is in the movie. In the books Buddy is just Terry's friend and in the sequel, his businesspartner.

Just saw the movie and I am pretty disapointed with all the changes that was made to the script. In particular I miss the hypnosis scene which was great and could have been very suspenseful if included.

reply

Yeah, that's what I've been told, sorry bout that, but based on the book, I was pretty I was rite...

"Are you askin' me out? that's so cute, what's your name again?"

reply

> Jeff Daniels plays James "Buddy" Noone.

Wrong, Jeff Daniels plays Jasper "Buddy" Noone and Rick Hoffmann plays James Lockridge. Double mistake in IMDB, but not the first one of that kind.

reply

Is that true, that Jeff Daniels character wasn't killer in the book? Why Eastwood (or Brian Helgeland) changed story so radically?

reply

Yes it is, and I don't know why Clint Eastwood changed the story, if you wanna know, you'll have to ask him, but IMO, it was a big mistake (you can tell him that too when you see him)

"Are you askin' me out? that's so cute, what's your name again?"

reply

I totally agree. I read the book and then saw that the movie was on television really late one night and I was very disappointed with it. The book was fantastic, but the movie just was very...crappy.

reply

did you read Connelly's book "the narrows" in this Bosch book Terry Mccaleb is killed off, maybe Connelly didnt like the Blood Work movie either.

reply

I too was disappointed how the movie made so many changes to the book, especially who the killer was. But from what I read, Connelly thought the movie was OK. I also saw him in person at a book signing and he confirmed that he was satisfied with the movie.

reply

Yeah, this movie started good but ended as a disaster. It is normal to make a few changes in order to adapt the story but this was really ridiculous. One of the posters mentioned the hypnosis scene - it is really a shame they didn't put it in. The scene was also crucial (in the book) to find who the killer was. Well, since they decided that Buddy should be the killer this at least leaves the audience happy that there won't be any crappy sequel :-)

reply

...just finished watching the movie! BIG DISSAPOINTMENT! Takes me back to watching one of the first John Grisham novels made into film....that got chnaged heavily as well! Blood Work is so drastically different to teh book! What were the thinking... thats all...as you were

reply

I can't believe that Michael Connolly would be happy with this movie. They changed every important development, every clue, every discovery and even the murderer. I mean, it bared hardly any resemblance to the book. Read the book, skip the film. The book was infinitely better.

reply

I can't believe that Michael Connelly would be happy that you spelled his name wrong.

reply

I don't think Michael Connelly is up himself enough to care.

reply

hey, glad to see a number of connelly fans here. have read all his books, and they are all excellent, maybe with the exception of 'void moon'.

i thought the movie was ok actually, but very few 'films from books' are as good as the books.

changing the solution and the perp was quite a drastic change to make ... !

as to what connelly thought of it, i think i read on his website that when asked about someone making a movie out of one of his books, what he said was: when you give someone a story it becomes theirs ...

reply

I enjoyed VOID THE MOON

reply

i just finished reading that book literally seconds ago, and i came here to check if i was right about them making buddy the killer as i remembered from watching the film and yep, they did! what a dumb change:P but anyhow, if you remember the end, it is revealed that McCaleb had killed HIMSELF, so thats an even more drastic statement by the author haha. this movie pissed off the main character so bad he kills himself... oh the funny irony

reply

The film gets several mentions in later books of Michael Connellys. Buddy Lockridge passes comment on being portrayed as the murderer and reference is made to Clint Eastwood being quite old to play the part.

reply

That's pretty funny how Connelly likes to mention the films/actors in his later books.

reply

I finished reading the book today. I was contemplating watching the movie. I will pass based on comments on this thread. Seeing what actors play what characters I am not happy with most. I think I like the idea of Jeff Daniels Buddy. That is the Buddy from the book. Anyone else was miscast. Eastwood is a fine director, but he should have directed someone else in the lead in Blood Work.

I am still reading my through Michael Connelly. I read Angels Flight before Blood Work. I saw the Lincoln Lawyer movie before reading the book and feel the movie did the book justice. I got ahead of myself with the next Lincoln Lawyer books and need to stay chronological with Bosch for a while.

There's not one Connely novel I didn't like. It was especially interesting having lived in LA, with his inclusion of LA history and geography into the novels.

Most movie adaptions are disappointing. As I found blood work to be, but mainly after reading the novel.

Connely interviewed Elliott Gould called about the movie The Long Goodbye. The movie had included an iconic apartment complex in Hollywood that connely included in one of his Bosch novels. The interview, I think, included a mention of Elliott Gould kind of having gone nuts in the 70s, making it difficult to find work being labeled unreliable.

Have you seen the promotional videos that Michael Connelly does? In one he goes around places, like The Narrows (I don't know if it's a place name, but I will still use capitals) that are used in his books. Since I don't live in the US it gives me an idea of place like that odd apartment complex - can't think of its name. They are on Youtube.

I liked the one about Hong Kong as years ago I actually had been to the building in which his daughter was held captive. The book, however, as a bit disappointing.

oddly enough, i enjoyed the movie's new twist. the book is, of course, more intricate and rewarding, but if you consider the film as an alternate theory, it's interesting. i'm horrible at figuring out whodunnit, and i actually suspected the movie version at one point when i was reading the book (his interest in detective fiction seemed fishy, pun intended). so, i guess i like the movie's twist because it vindicates my lame intuition. "Blood Work for Dummies," as it were. not quite the glowing film review, but oh well. yeah, the book is more satisfying but that's the way it should it be with great fiction. Connelly's the man.
