How did he make his money?

The movie is a little confusing as to how Platon made his money, and other plot details. Let's see if I've got this right (spoilers):

He starts at university with his circle of friends selling university theses and counterfeit stonewashed jeans (which they stonewashed themselves). They use the cover of a broom-making co-operative which doesn't actually sell many, if any, actual brooms. They get into the big league through car trading, getting around the financial restrictions on co-operatives by bartering fictitious brooms for the cars. The cars are then smuggled cross-border to avoid excise. This business becomes Infocar. Later the Afghanistan veteran Belenky, who has connections to very high places, blackmails Platon by impounding a car shipment and demanding excise. Platon accuses his colleague Victor of betraying him by being in cahoots with the blackmailers. Victor commits suicide over this, but is later proved innocent. Platon brokers a deal with Belenky whereby a circle of debts between himself, Belenky's connection, and other debtors/creditors are forgiven, while Platon acquires a bank as part of the deal. When the communist apparachik Koretsky attempts to blackmail Platon, Platon flees for Paris. Unhappy in Paris, he realises that by buying a TV channel and helping elect a puppet politician, he can bypass Koretsky. He returns to Russia, and starts promoting the idiot puppet, who then gets delusions of grandeur and betrays Platon. Platon fakes his own assassination. One of Platon's colleagues suspects Larry of betraying Infocar and arranging Platon's death, and attempts to kill Larry. But he is accidentally killed instead by the traitors, who were actually after Platon. It turns out that Musa was responsible for the betrayal, and Larry arranges the killing of Musa, Koretsky and the puppet politician, the former without Platon's knowledge. Larry arranges for all of them to flee Russia, but Platon turns back, wanting to keep going.

Have I got any of the above wrong? Is there anything important that I missed?

Hm, I think You got some things wrong.... I don't think Belenkiy was blackmailing him, they were actually doing very good business and both parts were happy. I don't think that Marc was intending to kill Larry, I guess he wanted to make sure nothing would go wrong and that's why he had a gun... But I am not sure, it's just that this is how I interpreted it.

Cheers. Actually I saw this movie again after my previous post, and noticed a few more things. Larry seemed genuinely shocked and unaware of the assasination attempt on Platon, so it was probably Koretsky and the idiot puppet Lomov who were behind the genuine but failed attempt on Platon's life. Also Musa hadn't necessarily betrayed Infocar, except by agreeing to sell his share after he thought Platon was dead, but he and Platon were talking at cross-purposes when discussing Musa's betrayal. Rather, the reason Koretsky knew his inside info was from phone taps.

Yes, things were cosy with Belenky later, but that was only after partnering with Belenky's connection. Remember they met Belenky only after Belenky's men offered to help free the impounded cars.

reply

Yes I think You are right... Anyway Belenkii was their only chance to make profit, otherwise they couldn't sell the cars (or whatever they were doing with them I don't remember anymore)

check for movie "Money_as_debt" if the bank explanation was too quick
