What were the filmmakers original intentions with Lost in La Mancha?

Did the two directors set out to just make a small account of the making of this film and then it just happened to turn into an absolute disaster and infamous failure?

who hired these people anyway? obviously they didnt just waltz in on the production and start filming whatever they wanted.

It's not uncommon anymore to have a small documentary crew on the set. That way the filmmakers have lots of material for DVD bonus features as well as promotional footage to help market the film. In this case, the "making of" intentions turned into "witnessing the destruction of".
