He Could Look Down Gravely For However Long...

The poem that Sam Shepard's character reads towards the end of the movie was one of my favorite parts.

It could be its simple words or Sam's voice that makes the poem so beautiful. Or, perhaps it's watching him wake up refreshed from the previous night's high, then sit reading Leo's letter in bed.

Anyone else enjoy it? Was it only a part of the script or from another source?

The following is not verbatim, but it's close.

He could look down gravely for however long he wanted to while the silence decide to declare itself.
What was it i was thinking?

And, he could keep his mouth so still.
How dedicated to the pain.

He could sit in a gray room long enough, and quiet enough to try to figure out what color the air was.

And he could gently lift a green, rolled ticket to his mouth and close his eyes to divine the destination...
waiting soundly to be sure he could hear the answer when it finally came blowing out.
I decline to accept the end.

He could look at his pant legs for hours before he moved, following the creasing with his finger, so he could feel the flesh they housed inside.
Can we even bear it?

And, he could lean back to be able to blend in with the wood,
it could swallow his sluggishness so that it anchored him firmly.
