Got into an argument about this movie.
I thought Mitsuko committed suicide after she realized her mother was not going to pick her up while my daughter said it was an accident. A suicide would be more disturbing and one would need further evidence. The evidence is she threw her lunch bag in the cistern before jumping in. She felt lonely and thought her mother didn't care for her because she was always the last one to be picked up. This had happened several times before. When she went home by herself, she thought she had to live in the old apartment by herself because her mother never came home. Had she stayed at school, then she would have been taken to an orphanage.
I disagree.

The bag fell into the tank, Mitsuko was reaching, reaching for the bag, then fell in.

Only thing, I connected the two tank-cleaning guys to her death. She went into the elevator with them. They returned, she didn't. Remember, Yoshimi (Mom) saw the date of last cleaning? It was the day Mitsuko disappeared.

I saw one interpretation that Yoshimi really was the Mitsuko (ghost girl's) mother. But there were only three years since Mitsuko's disappearance. That's not enough time for her to remarry and have Ikuko, who was 6 at the time of the story.

PS May I suggest you add "Spoilers" to the title of your post?

That's what my daughter said. I can't watch the movie again just for that. The other scene that creeped me out was the elevator one. There are old elevators like that in Los Angeles.

ETA: There also was the mysterious case of Elisa Lam who drowned in a water tower in Los Angeles. Coincidence?
