Can anyone tell me...

...was the entire point of the film simply about the strength of a mother's love and her desire to protect her daughter? Was there some really outlandish theme, pertaining to Japanese mythology or culture that I missed? I didn't think I missed anything, but it seemed almost too simple. I am shocked I'd never seen this, because it's so well received in horror circles, but this one fell flat for me. I love slow burn Japanese horror, but this one was a little too slow, for such a subtle ending.

That's what I got out of it.

Only thing that confused me was , I connected the two tank-cleaning guys to Mitsuko's death. She went into the elevator with them. They returned, she didn't. Remember, Yoshimi (Mom) saw the date of last cleaning? It was the day Mitsuko disappeared.
