Somebody loves David Lynch...

anyone else notice all the references/homages to david lynch in this movie ?

the "lost highway" shot of the highway, the severed ear ala blue velvet, the mysterious "woman in white", and how about ray wise screaming out "laura" (as he did in twin peaks) are just a few things i noticed that had very direct similarity to lynch's films and cinematic style.

many of the edits between scenes seemed very lynch like, and the general tone/lighting of the movie was so similar to lost highway or much of the twin peaks series.

overall i found this film to be quite surprisingly entertaining. i felt it to be a perfect combination of horror and comedy. yes, i believe the comedy was absolutely intentional, many of the lines were delivered so perfectly dead panned, yet came across quite hilarious to me. i thought ray wise was particularly effective in his delivery. he was really the strongest part of the whole film.

i found the mix of horror/suspense/comedy to very lynch like as well. perhaps the director is a bit of a lynch fan boy...or maybe that is just me.

I agree ! I couldn't help thinking about David Lynch while I was watching this movie. Every single time Ray Wise screamed "Laura !" I immediately thought of Twin Peaks.

And also when he's punching his daughter in the face, and then starts hugging her as she's unconscious and sobbing "My baby, my baby..." it sooo reminded me of the scene where Leland/Bob kills Maddy Ferguson !

You're right about the severed ear and the shot of the road, too, very Lynch-like ! Same about the horror/comedy mix (of course the comedy in Dead End was intentional, I don't understand why some people think it wasn't. So many fun/ironic lines...).

So yeah, it's not just you - the director probably is a bit of a Lynch fan =)

"You know, this is - excuse me - a damn fine cup of coffee."
