Weren't they overreacting? Spoilers

He was only going for seven years. They were making it sound as if he was going to death row. I've known people who have gone to prison and have several relatives who are prison guards. These characters were taking every stereotype and magnifying them by a thousand.

He had Gov. Rockefeller and himself to blame for that.

Seven years is a long time.

"I gave you a haircut, not a lobotomy!"

Its 7 years hard time. He then comes out as a convicted drug felon and essentially his life is hosed, in addition to possibly having a larger sphincter. Don't deal drugs, people!

reply

Put yourself in his position and then tell me seven years in prison is not long enough.

I know right? And it's not only that, it's the beatings, the potential rapes and the millions of other stuff you might have to do in order to survive. 7 years in jail changes a man and there's no going back. It's definitively no joke.

"People who don't like their beliefs being laughed at shouldn't have such funny beliefs"

That made me laugh so hard! Thank you. I grew up hardcore Christian, and some of my favorite jokes I've heard have made me feel like I have an express ticket right to hell, yet I laugh anyway.

On subject, any amount of time in jail or prison is life changing.

I spent 3 very long days in county jail after standing up for myself in a domestic violence situation. I have never felt so terrified, helpless and worthless.

That is just 3 DAYS in a minimum security jail, with other women. The other inmates were friendly and helpful. The worst I went through was having to strip naked and be thoroughly cavity searched, having to undress and squat and cough as a "routine check", and the terrible *beep* food, ugh.

I absolutely cannot imagine the horror of being sent to a men's prison for 7 years. I am not sure that I could survive.

There was a scene between Barry Pepper and Seymour Hoffman. Pepper explains that when Monty gets out, after 7 years, they won't suddenly revert to their old relationships. All of them are going to be nearing 40. In that time, they will build new relationships, they may get married, they may have kids, they may change significantly as persons. Even Monty, after 7 years in prison, won't be the same guy.

That why's Pepper tells Hoffman, "After tomorrow, it's over."
