Will it be released in the USA?

I was wondering if Zapata will be released in the States? I'd really like to see it, so does anybody know?

reply

supposedly, it is going to be released in the US in november, 'cause Arau is seriouslly thinking about entering to Oscar 2005 competition. It was going to be released this february in México, but it was posponned til april, but i think the plans of releasing it this year in the US are almost secure.

I've seen some photos, and even when i don't think that neither screenplay or actors will be good, the visual work is awesome, especially the art direcyion (by eugenio zanetti, who won an Oscar with restoration), costumes, and cinematography by vitorio storaro, who has won three oscars in very important movies as tha last emperor or apocalypse now...

Given the enormous amount of money involved in this production (the most expensive movie in Mexican cinema history) I would say is very likely for you to see it in your hometown.

On a personal note:
Arau has the opportunity to revolutionate mexican cinema industry by actually creating one. Up till now is the goverment who gives most of the money for movie production. Arau may convince mexican investors that investing in movies may actually be a good bussiness. Of course the quality of our cinema will tend to go down (in general) but the amount of jobs created is really worth it.

Really this movie 5uck5.. but i think mexico won't send it to the oscar even when the academy may choose it (they aren't very good at choosing the best, everybody perfectly knows it). There are chances for this movie to get a nom in costumes and cinematography, but it is a longshot.

There are two probabilities more: Temporada de Patos and A day without a Mexican. I haven't seen any of those, but i think Temporada de Patos will be the best, the director has made some great videos (like mr pmosh), the movie did excellenta at Guadalajara and the music by Alejandro Rosso will be great!!!

A day without a Mexican seems to be a better choice, not because of the quality, but because of the controversial theme and the projection that it will have in USA, where it will be released this year..

So these are the three chances, if we want to get a nom we should send Zapata, it we want to do something risky but we may win we should send A day without a Mexican, and if we prefer to sen the best, there's Temporada de Patos

Who knows??? Mexico has send good films but never something risky, like when we sent Perfume de Violetas (good) instead of Y tu mama tambien (risky, but finally the academy loved it); and last year's Aro Tobulkhin instead of a very strange movie like Japon, that i think was a wrong decission: it is better to send a risky film (30% chances they loved it, 70% they hated it) than a regular film (10% they hated it, 10% they loved it and 80% good but nothing special)

Actually the road was well paved by both Amores perros and Y tu Mama Tambien whose money came from private investors and they managed to give em big earnings despite being smart movies.
Im prety sure some of this new wave of comercial BS movies like Ladies nigth, sin ton ni sonia, asesino en serio are being produced py private investors who are making decent profits on acount of the movies being dirt cheap unnlike this multimillion crap who i dont see recuping its money on the Mexican market so i doubt it will help the industry, if anything it will give Arau a chance to do another american movie that doesnt go straigth to video.

WAIT!!! Don't... don't see this movie!!! Listen to me (an ashamed mexican cinema lover).

WORST. MOVIE. EVER. Even worse than Dreamcatcher and Along came Polly, go figure.

I honestly think this didnt win an oscar, or came close

I simply want to see the movie on DVD and make up my own mind.
Arau was honored at last year's (March 2006) San Diego Latino Film Festival and this film wasn't even mentioned.
Very strange!
