Crappy Ending!!

I was really enjoying this movie - until the stupid ending!! What a letdown. It made the whole plot seem absolutely pointless, ruining what could have been a decent movie.

7/10 Before the End Scene.
4/10 After the End Scene.

I completely agree!! I was so disapointed with the ending.

Why you all people are disapointed in bad endings ? It was very realistic ending i think. It's not a Hollywood movie with Happy Ending.

I also didnt want the ending. Its kinda heavy to feel it, I wish it was lighter at the end. But then, I dont want Jenny and Jack to be together as well, I will surely be jealous. I love Hugh Dancy. :)

it didn't really bothered me that jack and sarah died. but what bothered me was that jack picked sarah over jenny (especially the fact that rachel's so pretty in this movie). for christ's sake, sarah can be his mother.

reply

that's what i though too. but overall i though it was just an o-k film. it would have been better if melanie was not in it.

reply

Jack's picking Sarah was the one thing that redeemed him and made the ending tolerable. He loved her and was loyal.

I truly despised the ending mainly because I am and shall always be a fan of the happy ending where no one ends up dead! I do agree with your view point however, that Jack's loyalty made the character reedemable and also loyal. I think the love between Sarah and Jack was both genuine and believable although some other viewers have indicated that they felt that Sarah was old enough to be Jack's mother. This dynamic of the younger guy, older woman, is not that new a concept and it actually even happened with Queen Elizabeth I and a certain Earl of Essex in the sixteenth century, which ironically, is a role that Hugh Dancy played with the fabulous Helen Mirren in HBO's phenomenal mini series Elizabeth I. I believe people were in awe with that coupling as well, which simply indicates that sexism is alive and well for it appears that no one actually cares when a woman shows up at an event on the arm of a man old enough to be her Grand-Pappy! As long as her mother doesn't also show up with a guy who looks like he's her son! I wish people would not worry so much about who others have chosen to love as long as it is within the proper moral code and between two adults. I do not think Hugh Dancy looked like Melanie Griffith's son in any way at all and in fact, she is a perfectly pretty woman with a nice figure who is more than appropriate to be paired with someone who looks like an earth angel.

Well I think I've said more than enough here and before anyone gets any ideas, I've always been more traditional in that same respect,I do not believe that Dancy's character Jack was under the age of being a legal adult and in fact, seemed to be at least in his late twenties, no? Please if anyone thinks that this is actually not the case, I would love to know! I actually liked Jack and Sarah together much better than I did the pairing with Jenny, who seemed rather ditzy and confused half the time besides, what self-respecting woman not only mauls a man she meets in the street on what was the end of a lovely platonic meeting only to practically devour the dude the first time he invites her over for dinner? I say that this chick walked into this with her eyes wide open and even when Sarah returned home early to Jack's dismay, Jenny still ran right back into the philandering lover's arms, after chanting, "I hate you so much, I hate you so much, I hate you so much!" Come on girl, no one here is fooled by these theatrics except you! I could see clearly why this character had ended up being booted out of school for failure to show up and she get's treated to a trip to ole' Pari? Come on give me a break, my parents would break my neck if I pulled such a silly stunt as to not show up to classes that they paid for, forget about treating me to an international jaunt overseas! I also did not like this character's incessant use of the "F-Word", I mean, did the writers not know of anything else for Jenny to say, except "F" You, "F" You! I mean she even took offense when Dancy the dish, asked her if it was her first time. My God, what girl would be offended by that, isn't it better than the man of your dreams (Remember Jenny told Jack she loved him after two dates!) thinking you are the slut of the city? Well anyway, I digress, let me continue with the main matter at hand and Jenny's otherwise shameless infatuation with a man she barely knew for two seconds. Granted, it is easy to see what could have led this miss to take leave of her senses because there is no question that Dancy's undoubtedly a dish, so yes a fellow dame could see the character's obvious quandry but even I, could have been a little more patient to sample the selection! Besides there is something to be said for anticipation and believe me the waiting for something incredible, is simply that much more delectable! I honestly think that the character Jack's only intention in sleeping with this silly damsel of dizziness, was his failed attempt to pay back his true love Sarah for the affair he mistakenly believed her to be having with someone else in Majorca. I think this story although entertaining could have been even more so, if they had simply kept Jack and Sarah alive in the end. Oh well, at least it was only a film and not one based on reality. Unlike another reviewer, I didn't cry when the main characters were murdered, although I felt saddened by their plight, I merely felt it was a case of "live by the sword, die by the sword". In this life, there is such a thing as karma and I suppose the illegal activities that Jack and Sarah had chosen to commit in a life filled with treacherous people led them to a fatal ending that was merely their horrific shared destiny. Does anyone deserve to be murdered in cold blood for the sake of material gain? Of course, not but it is something that truly does happen far too often in criminal circles. It is unfortunate and the thing that truly made me sorry was the fact that this adorable, intelligent, enchantingly naive guy, was caught up and eventually killed trying to save the woman who had chosen to live the wrong kind of existence. I wanted to see Jack become that brilliant restaranteur that he seemed to possess both the culinary skills and the vision to become one day. As Jack stood in that restaurant that was never to become his reality, you could clearly see the excitement and it was breathtaking to behold. Everyone should feel that passionate about a goal that he or she wants to achieve so desperately! It was terribly tragic for me as a viewer since I could see the potential that Dancy's sweetly kind, decent and ambitious character Jack, would never have the chance to live up to and in my eyes, that is the true tragedy, promise unrealized is almost always a heartbreaking contemplation and my only consolation here, is that this story was fictionalized and not a true life account. I actually think that was part of the moral this film offered, that eventually, the way we choose to live our lives, will always catch up with us, no matter how much we may try to run or hide. Sometimes even when people have chosen to do the right thing and stop committing crimes, they become caught up in the past that catches up with them in the present, a sad reality perhaps, but none the less, a reality that can simply not be denied, as we could see so clearly with Jack and Sarah. No matter how far and fast they ran, they could neither hide nor escape their shared, devastatingly fatalistic fate and that my dears, is a wrap.

Hey,

Thanks for replying to my first post and yes, I guess it was just kind of fun to get into talking about the film and you're right about that Dancy, he's absolutely delish! I am looking forward to actually seeing Beyond the Gates,(Shooting Dogs does not seem to be as meaningful a title, I don' think but oh well!) thank you for the information. The film does focus on rather serious historical events, horrifically tragic and definitely important enough to see.

I'm actually really into everything featuring this talented actor right now, and I have seen a few of his web sites where the British release of this movie was reviewed. Since you seem to be just a wee bit smitten perhaps, you might find HughDancyFan.com, a worthwhile web site. I think you will agree that Hugh is one talent too good to miss. So do, visit the site and enjoy the view of everything Hugh.

Hi and thanks for the recommendation, I will check it out as soon as I have a chance. I've not had a free moment to come to this site in a while but I'm glad I checked in and thanks again for the information. I understand why you would be so besotted, this lad Hugh is certainly worth the view so don't worry yourself, just enjoy! I feel like this, as long as one isn't stalking an entertainer or person that they happen to admire, it's not a big deal. It's merely an enjoyable and harmless outlet to have a celebrity crush, trust me, it happens to a lot of people, you are truly not alone!

Well Thanks again.

God this film is awful. The ending worked, but was pretty dumb too. Such a bad film. I love the Dancy, but this was painful to watch.

reply

The ending was the only thing original / surprising, but of course I wanted Dancy to finish with Cook and open the restaurant, but I guess that would be too much of an happy ending.

reply

I think the ending was fine and logical because Jack had a guilty feeling toward Sarah. Yes, Sarah could be his mother but that's not the point. If you truly care about someone, do you really care how old he/she is?

What killed me was the editing. It was so bad! Many pointless, repeating frames, such as the flashes of the traffic, showed up. There was a scene of naked Hugh in the shower and could be more meaningful if it was put in the right moment, presenting his guilt and troubled mind more than just a beautiful body.
