So he just walked away from his job on Earth?

At the beginning, it shows Clooney's character working as a psychiatrist on Earth, in what appears to be a nice, well-established practice, with many patients.

So, these two guys walk in with a video recording from his friend, asking him to come to a remote space station on what is literally a deep-space house call, which entails (most likely closing his practice, giving up his leases, losing all his patients, losing who-knows-how-many years on Earth (he will spend the trip in hibernation there and back), all for a house call? The company in charge doesn't have any doctors available for this kind of mission?

Sorry, just seems a bit crazy. More crazy than aliens on another planet bring to life our dead family members.

I think the trip was faster than with today's technology. Maybe via wormhole. And Keliv while having a lucrative practice felt pretty miserable on earth. So he probably wanted to get away.

I'm sure there was compensation for any lost business. Besides, it waa temporary mission.
