it's not like Gary Oldman having a film coming straight to video
he is a very talented actor and should get more respect than this

If I'm not mistaken, Michael Stevens directed it, and I don't think he's ever done anything except produce before. He either needs to stick to his old day-job or get some more practice before he's up to the caliber of directing pictures with Gary Oldman in them. Too bad GO didn't direct it. Now there is a proven director! Seeing Nil by Mouth, I can't imagine what he could do for an encore, but GO always has a suprise of one type or another up his sleeve.

Even though GO is great and plays his part incredibly well, as he always does, the directing pretty much ruined any chance the movie ever had of getting off of the ground; probably the reason Columbia Tri Star, sent it to STARZ in December 2003 in the US and then straight to video, first in Europe this month and then in the US next month.

I think GO would probably be the first to admit that the movie was incredibly flawed, being that he's so honest and straight forward. Of course, he thinks most of the characters he plays have flaws. What I mean to say is that he always thinks that he could have done better. At least that's what he has conveyed in his past interviews. Haven't seen much of him in the media lately. Can you imagine he originally thought he was terrible in Sid and Nancy. He even said in an interview, Nil by Mouth was flawed. I don't know how. It moved me to tears.

As for GO deserving more respect than he gets, (at least from the media and the studios) you're right on the money. I am one of his greatest admirers, at least I consider myself to be, and in my opinion, there is not actor that can even compare to the multi talents of Gary Oldman. At least not so far in my lifetime.

Let's hope Tiptoes gets a great response in the US film festival.
