My problems with this movie

First of all, I will iniciate this assessment that I don't loathe this movie. But it's far from a favorite of mine. I recently saw it for the first time in many years and I'm still not able to warm up to it. I'm not saying this horrible; It has good animation, fine voice acting and some genuinely funny moments. However, I think this movie is hampered by some obvious flaws (at least for me) which prevents it from being really compelling.

My first problems is the plot and the protagonist. Oscar is just not a likeable character at all (for me). He's stupid, immature, self-centered and shallow. Yes, his nature was a deliberate choice to make his arc clearer, which he does. But not without being a reckless liar and manipulating everyone around him.
From a logical standpoint, it's essential to root for your main character despite their flaws. But Oscar is not a compelling character. Considering his shallow, short-sighted needs, it's harder to actually care for what's going to happen to him. In fact, Lenny is a much more compelling and likeable character than Oscar. Not only because that he's more likeable. His arc is overall more resonant (a shark who wants to make his father and everyone around him proud for his good deeds).

The romance between Oscar and Angie is also a less inspired. In fact, how anyone could swoon for a selfish jerk like Oscar is a mystery for me. It's hard to see what Angie actually saw in him. His part of the romance was also contrived. She reveals her crush on him and after a night of pondering, he suddenly has feelings for her? Just like that?

I also thought the pacing was overall frenetic. Which made the movie schizophrenic. The pacing was too fast, especially in the action sequences and the scenes where the characters where arguing. There were too much going on, too much dialogue and interaction, which made everything dizzying.

Sorry if I seem like I'm bitching, but I just wanted to share my point of views. You're welcome to share your thoughts with me.

Oscar is definitely a self-centered and otherwise flawed protagonist but I don't think he's so flawed that you don't care what happens to him; him wanting to get rich and be at the top is understandable, especially when most others disdained his and his father's work. Regardless, Lenny and Angie are pretty prominent supporting characters if not verging on being co-stars.

I strongly agree that the romance aspect didn't work or make sense; I was disappointed that Oscar suddenly sharing the romantic feelings was suddenly thrown in when it seemed like it was just felt one-sided (and not too strongly) by Angie.

I don't know how the pacing was a problem, one thing I liked was that it wasn't an action film or typical action story and yet the chases and action scenes were still pretty exciting.

Wow! Due to the time being since I've even started this thread, I had completely forgotten that I've even started it. However, I agree with your statements.
