Back in 2003/04 not a lot of people thought of Smith as an Oscar contender (although he had gotten one best actor nomination). It could have reflected wishful thinking by the filmmakers given that both Shrek and Finding Nemo had been considered Oscar-worthy and/or that the character was somewhat grouchy-Oscar the Grouch?
