EVERY bad thing happened to this band...

...except alien abduction!

I wanted to like this movie, I really did, but I couldn't. Part of the reason: It might've helped if Clam Dandy [?!?] was either a truly good or truly bad band. As it was, they were basically a generic-sounding grunge band...and most of the "real" grunge of the '90s (imho) sounded like poorly-played 1970s arena rock. There was a reason the band wasn't more "successful" (in this movie): They were singularly unexceptional.

As a professional female musician (whom attained considerable more success than the band in this film), I can attest to the accuracy of your assessment AND the accuracy of the film. I, too, wanted to like it but as the film wore on I started to question the credibility, as in 'no way a band this mediocre could go anywhere'. But, in the end, it was dead-on accurate: they busted their asses like so many bands I've known, but achieved - after how many years? - a slight local following and a crappy indie label offer that essentially offered what a band of their caliber deserved: next to nothing. It was that very realistic outcome that ultimately elevated my opinion of the film.
