wait, so if a girl dosen't like me, i should make her a hooker, *nods*

Ugh, this was one of the worst cinema experience ever. Theres an explicit difference in praising a film for it's bold stance on society, ingenuity and art,
and simply saying "It's ok to ruin people's life, take their dreams and live them in a sesspool of rape, dirt and tears, as long as you love them"

What i don't understand really is why people rate this film higher than a 4, the bad guy in the film is your average murder and rapist, in real life, you would be spitting at him, if it was your girlfriend, you would break all hell loose on him, not say "I'm sorry i was angry, all is forgiven cause you love her",

can someone please tell me why the heck this film is in existence,

reply

Don't be 1 dimentional.

reply

Don't be one dimensional? Your basically saying theres a good side to every crime, and sadistic action of every bad person, you might as well say seeing the holocaust purely as humanity in it's worst is 1dimensional.

If you watch over and really analyze the "Bad Guy," as well as Sun Hwa, you will notice more on the take the director was aiming for which is economic background and differences. Yes the Bad Guy in the film is your average rapist/murderer but if you can get a sense of the emotions behind his character you can feel his sympathy towards Sun Hwa. Yes it is very hard to understand this because Kim Ki duk did such a wonderful job on revealing differences in social status. It is also confusing how the Bad Guy can do what he did to someone he feels for. But if you watch over and over, HE is a member of the lower class society in Korea, and therefore it shows how even people of his status feels sympathy. SYMPATHY and feelings in a very disturbing way. It is also hard for us to watch because we witness Sun Hwa adapt from the living conditions of the upperclass to the lowest of human society which is being around pimps, prostitutes, etc. But in the end, Kim Ki-Duk does finish the movie well with showing us how people of different backgrounds can actually be meant for eachother. This is one of my favorite movies.

i understand, but when you get to the gritty of it, the film is simply about a bad guy punishing a woman, dehumanising her, then running off with her into the sunset in a rusty mobile.
lol your last line is laughable forgive me, but there are better ways to show the compatibility of people from different backgrounds

I guess it depends on what the viewer thinks makes a good movie. Some people want a movie to provide a good, moral lesson, while others just want a story with no judgement or sermonizing. And personally I think this film is for those in the second category. I don't think the director was saying it's ok to ruin people's lives and that love excuses everything, I don't think he was saying much at all. I guess maybe he was attempting to make some comments about social status but if so he failed miserably.

I prefer to just see the characters in this movie and not some larger social commentary. And yeah the bad guy is a low-life murderer/rapist/pimp, and an average one at that, and that's fine, characters in movies don't have to be larger than life, just people, movies can be about average people and still be very good.

reply

But that's the point, the average person is not a "low-life murderer/rapist/pimp,"
If it was we wont create an establishment, aka prison them.

reply

the name of the film is "Bad Guy"

reply

"Bad Guy" and all other Kim ki-Duk movies shouldn't be seen as normal movies, they are a trip inside the directors own eccentric creative mind, that's why the reactions and behaviors of the characters involved in his works seems illogical to the viewer

reply

It seems so illogical, because it is. You cant create a dove out of fish eggs. It fails in trying to depict an everyday life, or a realistic one in the least. It also fails as a fantasy.

reply

i think there is multiple ways to read the film, and yea i agree that one of the readings is that he is justifying the bad guy because he loves her.

but i think in this movie characters go through changes. so the bad guy at first is a nasty guy, but by the end of it, he although still a nasty guy, decides to let the girl free. basically he tacitly accepts his wrongdoings by letting go of her.

but then she perhaps realizes that all she knows now is being a prostitute. so she continues to work that way. and the two having established a working relationship go off together, in their pimpmobile.

reply

lol, so the bad guy still is a bad guy, but after doing all the bad things to her, just lets her go,...and that redeems him how, it's not even the matter of redemption cause there is none of susbstance which makes the whole film pretty much watching your average dirty hooling live he's average life...a tale you can see with great ease, bad guys arent hard to find,

But she then falls in love with him?

O_O

The hellish journey started when the girl pick the wallet and get the money in it. That's the point, if the girl is good behavior, just take the wallet to the nearest police station. But the storyline would be goes different, right ?

reply

That very clearly illustrates the intention of the screenwriter/director to make a point that neither the good/wholesome or the depraved/horrible are exactly what they seem. The good can have vices, and the bad can have heart.
