Is it as funny as monty python and the holy grail? Just wondering.

reply

NO WAY!
I was there @ the world premiere showing... and me, and everyone else I know, thought shooting that movie was a complete waste of good film material, time and money.
The only good thing about that movie was the fact that we could see and recognize bits and pieces of our little LUXEMBOURG :-) ... by far the nicest spot on the face of this planet....
if you like extremely shallow entertainement... you might want to watch that movie with lots of tortillas and at least 10 drunk friends on a DVD evening.

Wisely spoken britney-5.. couldn't have said it better myself! :)
Maybe a 6-year-old would appreciate some of it... I guess.

reply

Exactly my analysis.
If you see "The Princess Bride" you'll be amazed to know it ranks on the top 250 list. The explanation is that it has a huge following of people who saw it as 5-7 year old kids. George and the Dragon is not much different. It's a (very) simple knight, princess and dragon story. Hardly humoros for grownups, but perhaps perfect for kids. (I have not tested it on any yet, so I cant be too sure :-)

I saw this movie as trying to be a cross between " A Knight's Tale", and "The Princess Bride", which are two of my favorite movies.
Manil, saying that you're amazed at finding "The Princess Bride" on the top 250 list is "inconceivable". I saw this movie when I was 18, and loved it from the first viewing. I still quote it to this day. (See the above).
"George and the Dragon" isn't a great movie, but James Purefoy definitely makes parts of it watchable.

reply

I love James Purefoy...so thats why it worked...I have simple demands after midterms...

"The Princess Bride" is a work of genius.....and you're a twatweasel.

reply

That's the best bit of name calling I've seen on these forums! And a perfect description of anyone who doesn't get The Princess Bride... :-)

There's no more room in hell...

I completely disagree. I'm very thankful that this film has been released, even if only on DVD.

For me and others Monthy Python humour is not very funny.

Yet, about this film my whole family can laugh. Nonetheless, we like as well more sophisticated films as '2001 - A space Odyssey' or 'Rashomon'.

We really like the tongue in the cheek humour in this less ambitious film and this perky playing games with the legend 'Saint George and the Dragon'.

As Neona_Sky already said (Mon Aug 28 2006): beauty (and humour as well) is in the eye of the beholder .

For me the play with the 'Saint George and the Dragon' legend is in no way shallow. Quite contrary it is fascinating. Moreover, we watched the film sober . Maybe you do not recognise all the contorted allusions to European legends and fairy tales if you are drunk .

yea there are funny parts.. its not supposed to be monty python..

Agreed. No one ever said it had anything to do with Monty Python/Holy Grail/Robinhood: Men in Tights (which is what my dad thought).
It's light humor in a cute/touching movie. It isn't meant to make those watching it roll on the floor dying of laughter.
It's sci-fi, adventure, action, comedy, romance-NOT just comedy.
Many, including myself, believe that overall it is a good movie. Though somewhat predictable, it was humorous. Also, it was entertaining-which is what matters in a movie. If you aren't entertained in the least, then so what. It's just a movie. I promise you, you WILL get over over it. If you like it, then great. Feel free to spread the word.

To the original poster - The only way to tell for youself is to watch it. I for one found Monty Python completely pointless - and not in the good and funny kind of way. But I did enjoy this movie. So really, it's all how you look at the glass. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I suppose.

Yep, it has a few funny moments...but in the way that parts of Star Wars and the Indiana Jones movies are funny. It's just a light adventure story.

No similarity to Python at all, apart from being in a fictional middle/dark ages in England.

reply

Not sure if it was "that" good, however, I sure enjoyed seeing Bill Odie, one of The Goodies in it!

It was a tounge-in-cheek comedy drama! It was supposed to be silly! And It was a very good movie!!!

I thought it was hilarious!
So,SHUT FACE!
Hahahaha lol
I actually only wanted to see this because Rollo Weeks was in it.I would still like the movie if Rollo wasn't in it. It was a great movie:]

reply

Not intentionally..

Probably not. It is exactly what it is. A cheesy movie that delivers cheese. If you go in expecting Shakespeare or Monty Python, you'll be disappointed, but if you go in expecting a bad movie and you like cheese, its good for that.

reply

I didn't think it was cheesy at all, I loved it! It's a silly little fantasy movie that puts you in another world for awhile and makes you laugh out loud, plus it has Puresex in it!!

reply

My personal take on it is that it's a parody of the 1980's swords and sorcery movies. If you liked any of those, like "excalibur", "krull", "dragonslayer", "conan", "beastmaster", "never ending story", etc. you can appreciate the quirky take on that aesthetic.

Having any expectations otherwise is bad.

It's not the greatest movie ever, but it is amusing.
