Or the fact that Paolo is an Italian popstar who can drive and is infatuated with a 14 year old American middle schooler...did you guys notice anything else that was funny/weird?

For one, I've never heard of a middle school graduation. When I finished 8th grade, there was no ceremony to see us off to high school. We just went to high school. Making it through 8th grade is not that big of an accomplishment... I certainly was never rewarded with a European trip for graduating middle school (I did get a trip to Italy and Greece as a high school graduation gift though).
Second of all, all the graduating characters were played by actors who were high school aged or older. None of them were believable as middle schoolers.
Paolo "liked" her because she looked like Isabella, the whole thing was a ploy to get Lizzie to fall flat on her face and make Isabella look stupid. Not really weird at all actually....

Lizzie's mom was a complete mess at the airport when Lizzie left for a 2-week long trip. She was just looking for an excuse to jump on a plane and see her daughter and Matt gave her one.

He was only interested in her because she was almost identical to Isabella and feigned infatuation to use Lizzie for his own means. They made that extremely clear by the end of the movie. share
Yes the whole jumping on a plane thing was very odd. Imagine being on a class trip on the other side of the world and your parents and siblings turn up! Surely that's cause for many, many years of therapy as an adult?
Also do the McGuires just have stacks of money lying around?! I'm from the UK and have lived in the US, when we used to fly home it was around $700 per person one way, will be not much different to go to Rome, plus hotel costs, in the school holidays. Would cost a fortune!
