Hello, I saw Le Divorce on Sunday and when Isabel goes to pick up her family at the airport, the brother makes a reference to Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! The whole audience laughed and I was left confused. I have seen that movie and cannot think of how it relates to Le Divorce!
I feel stupid for asking, but could someone explain that to me? Thanks!

Ya, I know. I would see it again, but I just saw it two weeks ago and don't have the $4.50 after giving up $10 this weekend for Le Divorce. I was just hoping someone would help me out. No "Clift"s Notes from you I guess.

Isn't the brother referrin to Isabel's hairstyle? I haven't seen Tie Me Up Tie Me Down in awhile, but I think the lead actress had a similar hairdo and outfit. Just a guess.
I am pretty sure this just refers to the fact that Isabelle looks trampy. In TMUTMD, the lead role is that of a trampy B-Actress. She did (even for the lovely Kate Hudson) look pretty skanky with the red lipstick and haircut from hell. I thought it was funny.

I basically agree with lostorage's comment. The remark abt Tie Me Up refers to how the Kate Hudson character looks. Not trampy or skanky, in my opinion, but sexy and not unavailable. She's 'gone Euro.' Spanish, French, what's the difference? The movie is pointing out they have more in common culturally with each other than with Americans. And it's also a cinematic nod to the Almodovar comedy.

i saw it with french subtitles, in a french theatre, and everyone laughed also, including the english people there who understood the audio part of it
so i felt left out frankly.
but sexy and not unavailable- emm i dunno, is that a bad thing according to americans? i mean is french/spanish acting a bad thing you guys look down to? isnt it the same thing everywhere? except the french pretend not to want it, whilst the americans dont bother with the whole hypocrisy , lets play chase game (i think)

I think it had to do with the hairdo. It was reminiscent of some of the Almodovar characters. There was an element of the transvestite or yes, trampy/camp to the look that reminded me of those moves. I haven't seen Tie Me Up Tie Me Down, but her look reminded me of some of the characters from his other movies like All About Your Mother (sp?).
Not to sound rude, sorry if I do, it's called All About MY Mother.

He is refering to her look. Haven't seen the film (it's been in my Netflix queue for a while), but his line is "she looks like something out of TMUTMD". My only guess is her appearance was something out of that film.

Specifically the lead character in 'Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!' is a highly strung, soft-porn actress who is addicted to many substances including (if memory serves) heroin.
So he's comparing her to a crazy, drug-addled porn actress.
