The Kelly bag..

Is this the same bag that Samantha wanted in satc? The episode with Lucy Liu how it was like a 5 year waiting list or something! Honestly, for a bag?!

Samantha wanted an Hermes Birkin bag. The bag Kate Hudson is given is also by Hermes but called the Kelly. Renee Zellweger, Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Sarah Jessica Parker all carry Kelly bags in real life. The Kelly bag is a two year wait list and runs anywhere from 10,000 to 13,000 dollars. It has a removable strap as well as top handles. The Birkin bag is a five year wait and a little more expensive. It is a larger bag and often used by the jetset as a carry on luggage bag. Both Kate Hudson and Naomi Watts were given Kelly bags as thank you gifts from the producers.

What an Hermes expert :D!! I thought i was the only person who knew stuff like that...
they could've given me a Kelly bag as PAYMENT for doing Le Divorce - that would've been plenty for me!

They wouldn't have known, except they're all acquainted with the ways of Uncle Edgar, and they know that his signature is to give his latest fling a Kelly bag. The coincidence would be too great that Isabelle just happened to buy a multi-thousand dollar bag that also happens to be the same multi-thousand dollar bag that Edgar gives his mistresses. They also know Isabelle could never have afforded the bag herself.

I'm sorry; please refresh my memory - who is Yves and what remark does he make to Isabelle? I saw this months ago when it came out and haven't seen it since...

My take on it is that the writer wanted to infer that in France most people are aware of what a Kelly bag is. And the like. So for Yves to say, "You must have stole that from a rich old lady", means he knows she (Isabel) is too young to wear one and/or not rich enough to afford one. And he knows this b/c he is French. I think that was what the film makers/writers wanted you to think. N'est ce pas?

mon plaisir.

That's what I assumed, too. Hermes is a French designer, mostly known in the States for beautiful scarves. Seems like they make some comment in the film about French women and their scarves (I'm pretty sure I have the right movie). The implication is that French people would know Hermes very well, and since VERY few people carry these bags, it would be known that you can't just walk in off the street and buy these bags, even if you DID have the cash. The waiting lists are just too long.

I wasn't aware that Hudson and Watts were given bags for appearing in the film, though.

Probably so.
SPOILER SPOILER
Olivia Pace also said she lost hers years ago - so that's another one floating around out there. If I were Isabel, I would have sold mine on ebay rather than thrown it out. That purse could pay my rent for a LONG TIME.

reply

LOL! Well we know of probably at least two of them floating above or in Paris! I recently saw one of them listed on Ebay with the beginning bid at $11,000 and some similar versions but they did not look like the real thing - not that I would know. While it was nice of the producers to give the girls a matching pair - if I were to receive one....it's sinful of me to say I know, but I'd much prefer to receive one from Uncle Edgar ;-)! (Only kidding)!

Who would in there right mind, throw a 3,000 bag off the Eiffel Tower? That is more stupid than killing a cheating spouse!!

reply

Does anyone know what size is the Kelly bag that Kate Hudson is carrying? It looks like a 32cm but for all I know it could be a 28cm ...

Sure, give ultra-expensive bags as gifts to actresses who are already quite wealthy, and could afford to buy multiple bags on their own! That bugs me almost as much as the 'gift bags' that stars get for attending sponsored events or awards shows. Ugh!

Anyway, I didn't see anything special about the Kelly bag. It was quite matronly.

reply

It's hilarious how much people will pay for something that just looks gross and tacky. When I first saw that bag in the movie I thought what an ugly bag. I was once bought a brooch as a present at work, and when I opened it I thought what a cheap ugly looking brooch (although I obviously smiled and said thanks) but everyone looked expectantly at me, and then someone explained it was by some famous designer and was really expensive. As though that should make you blind to the fact that it's hideous.

Don't get me wrong, I was grateful, but paying ridiculous amounts for ugly stuff just because it's expensive, when you can get a cheap knock off that looks exactly the same anyway, is the stupidest thing ever! In my opinion. But I guess it makes some people happy. And bankrupt!

In the ads for "Le Divorce", Kate Hudson is actually holding a Birkin. I can't understand why they couldn't use a Kelly - the Kelly Bag was almost like another actor in the movie.

Kelly Bags start at around $3000.00 and Birkins start at slightly more. There is a waiting list.

reply

The waiting list for the Birken and Kelly handbags by Hermes has officially closed. People buying brand-new Kelly bags are now paying $22,000.00.

Hermes is basically no longer selling those bags, at least not for a while. People currently on the lists wait from 3-5 years (depending on how important, rich, or famous you are, i suppose) and will get their bags when promised. By closing the lists for a year or so, Hermes is saying that those already on lists will get their bags, but no one can sign onto the lists for at least a year. They are also creating an even bigger demand for them.

Genius way to create a demand for a $22,000 bag, IMHO. As I said earlier, fakes can easily be purchased on the streets of NYC (and possibly other big cities). I've never seen a Kelly fake, but Birkin fakes are everywhere. They're usually blue or red.

Did anybody notice that in the print ads for "Le Divorce" a Birkin bag
is featured and not the Kelly bag? Quite an oversight since the Kelly bag
was practically a main character in the movie!!
