a bad show...

ive heard it appeals to real cops cause the lingo is so realistic.. Other then that. the forced "look how gritty and real this is" is cringe. Even though its totally unrealistic a would never happen.

I mean ill give it another try... its just not that interesting or good.

cool let me watch 15 mins of setup and buildup just for some junkie to try and rip off a low level dealer with a fake bill. wowwww. so interesting. so much character development.

like honest why the f do I care? I could be watching literally anything else. the sopranos. game of thrones season 1-5, the boys, band of brothers, breaking bad again, Fargo, death note, cowboy bebop, the office. anything else

the wire is drama for the sake of drama while posing as a "gritty realistic street level cop show"

reply

Maybe some of the problem is it began 18 years ago.
I started watching it not long ago under some free promotion that ran out quickly.
I'm currently enjoying Ray Donovan more but I can see how The Wire turned heads went it first arrived.
And my old Blockbuster had all The Wire DVDs stolen because they had that much appeal at the time.
A lot of people thought very well of it, which accounts for something.

maybe it was new and innovative and "never seen before" kinda thing when it came out. maybe ill give it a try again but I can remember the feeling of the seemingly the irrelevant small scale plots and side plots and thinking "I could be watching so much more epic with more stakes"

You're dumb. And you could cherry pick a random scene from most shows to say "why would I care about this" The show pieces it all together by telling a complete story by seasons end. If you don't want to finish more than the first few episodes than keep it moving no one cares.

That one scene was an example of the overall show. a weak narrative

It's one of my favorite shows and I've watched it twice. The show provides an up-close view of the various components of a city. The show provides a view of the streets, city hall, the newspaper, the schools, the police force, the courts, the docks and the various crime organizations. There are so many members of the cast that have gone on to do great things. The chemistry between the two lead detectives is great and Omar was a modern-day Robin Hood.

David Simon was a Baltimore Sun reporter for twelve years so he used his knowledge of the city to write a realistic show. A few of the actors were from Baltimore and they added some authenticity. It certainly isn't a bad show but I could see how some people might not like it.

that's fair

Sometimes people need to just learn to say "I don't like it" and move on. Nothing wrong with that, nothing wrong with disagreeing with others. It's all about opinion, not right or wrong.

But this is a very familiar scenario. A very highly acclaimed and highly rated show. At the time it aired it recieved great reviews and plaudits.

But along comes someone who watches it some years later, and can't understand what all the fuss is about.

And rather than simply say they don't like it, they have to attack it , because they have obviously read or been told its a very good show. So they feel the need to tear it down.

And worse, infer that there is something wrong with the people who liked it. They don't understand what they saw in it etc.

It's like there is something wrong with lots of people liking such a show, when this one person cannot understand why. So the default position for them becomes "I can't be wrong. So it must be everyone else that's wrong".

The sensible thing to do would be to say "Not for me" and move on. Or at least offer a proper critique and reasoning as to why they don't like the show.

LOL, the show is written by an ex cop. There hasnt been a more realistic show ever made. You can choose not to like it, and thats fine. Everyone has their own tastes, but to say its unrealistic is laughable, save for season 5
