Acid Yellow (spoilers)

I wonder if anyone else is left unsatisfied with the Acid Yellow scene? Cage never states it, but he makes it blatantly obvious that AIDS has started to surface. I was totally waiting for Sonny to bang out one of those guys and contract the disease. It never happens. Even before that, given the year and his line of work, I was sure he would get sick. It's a basic rule of thumb that you don't bring a gun into a scene and not have it go off.

What was the whole point? If it was to show how upset he was about learning who his father was, we kind of figured that out way before this. I love this film, but this part just bothers me.

I agree, that really bothered me as well. As soon as I heard Cage's line about being "sick" I immediatley thought AIDS and made the assumption that thats where this movie is headed, obviously not. Useless scene in my opinion, Im sure there was some other way to fit that character in somehow.

I agree, although I think they threw it in to show how scary it could be for a sex worker (I guess that's what they're called now.) at that time, without ever knowing it.

The thing I hated most about the Acid Yellow scene is that it didn't really match the rest of the movie. Up until that point, everyone looks like regular people who just happened to make their living selling sex, stealing stealing stuff or selling stolen stuff. Kind of low key and quiet.

Then in comes Acid Yellow looking and sounding like a Halloween pimp costume that's all exaggerated and trying too hard. Even Acid Yellow's drag queen girlfriend with her orange and green poodles didn't seem that far out. Acid Yellow acted totally whacked and kind of dumb. It doesn't seem realistic to have an underground kingpin act such a fool.

I always think of Nic Cage as one of those "look at me, aren't I cool" actors rather than a chameleon who disappears inside his role. Sonny just confirmed the prejudice I already had. I'm glad he limited himself to those few scenes.

No two persons ever watch the same movie.

Yeah I assumed he would have sex with the guy and then get AIDS too. my whole assumption with the talk of "getting that new bug" was Hmm AIDS?

I thought the scene seemed a little out of place and thrown together. However I took it to give an insight into Sonny's future if he didn't get out of the business.

We heard from those around him throughout the movie that being a whore was "a young mans game". If Sonny didn't get out of the life soon he would likely have to face the prospect of working for men. Coupled with the onset of Aids in that era. It was really a life and death scenario for Sonny.

Anyway, just my .02$

1981-82, which was when this movie was supposed to take place, was when AIDS (first called GRID) started coming into public consciousness.

So of course the dialogue about "the new bug going around" was supposed to be about that.

I think maybe the scene of Sonny beating up the trick in Acid Yellow's club was supposed to be an 'escape hatch' for Sonny as far as the audience was concerned: After beating up the trick in Acid Yellow's club, Sonny's name would be mud in all the gay clubs, word would get around that he beats up gay clients, so no pimps or whorehouse madams would hire him on to do that stuff anymore. Since he didn't want to do it anyway he would basically stick to straight sex jobs from then on.

So we the audience can imagine that Sonny manages to avoid getting AIDS in the next several years. Maybe.

Him being pissed over Henry's death and learning he was his father probably played into it too (see the other thread).
