Why didn't this one catch on?

I never got a chance to see it either. Given how great the '70s show is, you would think this one would have been a hit too. Everyone loves nostalgia. The cheezy, electronic Reagan era...they should try to bring it back someway.

It did better than That 70's Show did early on, but it wasn't given the same amount of time to grow AND it was never given spots on the schedule with big lead in shows to help it with exposure to large audiences like That 70's Show was given. If I remember correctly; That 70's Show premiered after the Super Bowl (not a bad lead in) and it was a bottom the hour show that was allowed to feed off of a lead in show until it built an audience to become a top of the hour anchor show. That 80's Show premiered at 8pm on a Wednesday and never had the benefit of a big lead in show to help it grow and it's ratings were just as good or better than That 70's Show's through the 13 episodes that it lasted. Don't get me wrong, I liked That 70's Show, but That 80's Show was never given the help and time that That 70's Show was given. Bummed me out.

I think people would enjoy a lot of nostalgia. Even if they decided to do a '40s, '50s or '60s show, it would be fun. They recreated the '70s very well, and in spite of the '70s show being kind of a parody of '70s sitcoms and culture, it was also very true and realistic in many ways. I especially liked Red's depiction of how veterans were gung-ho supportive of the US Government in spite of how it sh*ts all over them, and how the values he was raised with (probably in the 1940s/50s) totally clash with the completely new mindset following the '60s.

It didn't catch on because the general public is stupid and doesn't realize a good thing when they see it...

Red's "depiction" is not symbolic of the 70s - it is a point-of-view that any decent and rational American would have, no matter which decade they are in. And any rational and reasonable value system will, of course, clash with the 60s "new mindset" and counter-culture - as that abomination really was value-less.

however the vets coming back from Iraq who had to serve two or three tours and are now suffering from depression and post traumatic stress disorder would not be too supportive of the US Government.

Our fantastic US Government refuses to pay for their medical bills and they put their lives on the line (and i would normally finish this sentence with "for us" but i think they put their lives on the line more for a Government agenda i.e oil, yet oil prices have been through the roof).

Let's face it, the US sucks at times. Our culture is too obsessed with greed and capitalism to the point that it screws us.

Simply said: too soon. They should have waited untill 2010/2012 to release such a project. I hope they do try again again in the next few years.

The constant TV promo ads turned people off. "How do you get it up?" Answer "How do you get it up." imagine that joke played over and over again for months and months then act surprised why it's not still on the air.

It never "caught on" because it was an attempt at comedy. Other than the great Ronald Reagan, just about everything from the 80s (music, pop-culture) was a silly and offensive joke. How can you make a comedy about something that is a joke in real life? It was easier to laugh at the real thing.

It didn't catch on because no one wants to remember the 80's... The 80's were a disaster to fashion and music, and the 70's were a lot more memorable. I was born in '89, I love watching That 70's Show, and still watch the reruns. I watched That 80's Show and the only thing I remember laughing at was the big ass cell phone they had. It's just not a decade people liked as much as the 70's.

Ha ha. Ha ha ha! HAHAHAhAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! Yeah right. Are you blind, stupid, both, or trolling? The '80s were one of the most loved and remembered decades. People to this day, even those who weren't born in the '80s (Such as myself) look up to the '80s. You may look up to the '70s, and while the '70s seem like a pretty good decade, it doesn't have crap on the '80s. Don't believe me? Try looking around. You'll see comments almost everywhere saying that the '80s had the best music and movies.

lol @ "Other than the great Ronald Reagan..."

Probably because no one wants to remember the drugged up yeas of the crappy 80's. I don't think there is one successful show about growing up in the 80s. You have Wonder years for 60's,various shows for 70s and Malcolm in the Middle and other shows for 90s.

I reckon it died because the will they/won't they couple finally did. No friction - no show.

I believe the show was a guest on Murder She Wrote. That's never a good idea.

It just wasn't that funny and the characters weren't interesting enough for audiences to latch onto. Like all comedy shows, you need a good cast and a simple plot/setting that audiences can identify with. They tried to duplicate "That 70s Show" by focusing on a group of youth, but they forgot to develop the family dynamic that "70s" had with their characters.

I don't agree with the above statements either that it failed because "The 80s Sucked". What lame reason to think that especially when you look at the current resurgence of 80s music and culture making a come-back not so much with Gen Xers, but with Tween/Gen Y as well. Sounds like people who had a bad biographical experience and are trying to project their bad memories as an attribute to this show's failure. Not so.

After seeing all 13 eps, I'm beginning to wonder why it was cancelled because, frankly, it's not nearly as bad as I heard. In fact, it's actually pretty good given that it's genesis was simply due to the popularity of That 70s Show and so one might expect it was just a way to cash in on the success of that show, which it probably was. But the characters really grow on you after the first few eps. The show ironically seemed to hit it's stride when it got cancelled.

Actually, except for the notable cameos from 80s icons (That 70s Show did the same thing with 70s icons), That 80s Show is really different altogether. I find much of the dialogue very humorous and clever. The actors did a great job with it, too. My favorite ep is Katie's Birthday.

It didn't catch on cause? they didn't do the show in a changing of the time kind of way. If the show had start in the middle of the 80's. it might have lasted alot longer? but instead it was 'that's 70's show' all over again. and it came out to soon,
