The reason this show didn't work was.....

The reason this show didn't work was because the characters often referenced that it was the 80's. On That 70's show it was rarely mentioned that it was the 70's so the show came across as more natural. The producers and writers made the mistake of thinking the show was popular because it took place in the 70's. When in reality it was the characters and their relationships with each other that made the show great. That 80's Show focused more on it being the 80's and the characters therefore came across as flat and unrelateable.

... because it sucked big balls! Wow. I saw it on one of my Hulu channels, and I don't recall such a show so I decided to check it out. I will be deleting it from favorites. I am currently watching the first/pilot episode. It is so bad that I decided to see some imdb comments.

What you (original poster) said above, absolutely true. I cannot refer to That 70s Show because I never watched it (didn't like it). But this show is trying waaaaaaaaaay to hard. It is so oversaturated with 80s references. The writing is forced and it sucks. It is not funny one bit. Not one bit. I don't even smile. When the sister was watching Pat Benetar's "Love Is A Battlefield" video I smiled because I like the song and video. The laugh track is atrocious. They push the laugh button every single time anyone talks. I don't like anybody. By the way, is that the dad from Happily Ever After (or whatever that show was called; with reese and bobcat goldwaith as the voice of the bunny)?

The second eps. is playing and so far I am letting it play since it is the episode after the pilot; and sometimes there is a big difference between the pilot and the 2nd episode. In this case......... Not. This show is sooooooo bad. Period.

One more thing that pissed me off......... no black in the main cast. By black I mean African American. In the 80s, there was always at least 1.

The Goldbergs kinda makes the same mistake. That show is a little better then That 80s Show, but not a lot better. It still references 80s pop culture way, way, WAY too much. Nobody in real life does that. Nobody in real life walked around saying "Hey these are the 80s!" or "Hey these are the 90s!", or "Oh now it's the 2000s!", etc.

I walk around saying "thank God the 90s are over!"
