shareI cant believe a ray killed him after all the really dangerous animals he encountered. and its so rare to be killed by a ray.
I am saddened by the news though he did die doing what he loved - making a documentary about the animals he put his life on the line for.
A sad day for Australia
The Genesis Ark is primed!
It was just a freak accident to have a stingrays barb hit just the right place like that.
RIP Steve
great white sharks, rattlesnakes, 14 foot crocidiles, then a stingray, god may he rest in peace

May God bless his family. Rest in peace Steve.
sharePoor steve. :( at least he died doing what he loved though. i wonder if he provoked the stingray or if it was an acident?
R.I.P. Steve Irwin
They said he accidentally swam too close to it. There's a report if you want to read it.

Here's the one from CNN

What are the odds? He swims with sharks, lets deadly snakes crawl on him, holds crocodiles and he ends up being killed by a stingray! How many times do stingrays kill people?! Its got to be pretty rare!

As I understand it, rays won't attack unless they're trod upon or believe themselves trapped. We sure don't have all the facts, but initial reports from those photographing at the site are that Steve inadvertently trapped the ray.
I sure hope people don't become unduly afraid of or angry with rays. That is the last thing he would want! What a terrible thing if fear or fear were to be any part of his legacy. On one of this evening's shows, there was sadly apt and accurate footage of Steve saying that when he died, it would likely be his fault, his having made an error. He knew the chances of that already, years before the fact. Common sense from an experienced--and wise--man.
