Offensive to Buddhists, You think?

I know it's a comedy and it is not suppose to take seriously but .. Is it offensive?

I don't know enough to really say. But I suspect the line about Buddha's weight would come across as more bizarre than offensive.
Gautuma Buddha's physical appearance is described in great detail in Buddhist writings, and he was actually very slim. So making jokes about his weight is just silly rather than insulting (the imagery of a jolly fat man is supposed to be symbolic, I think)

To give you a vague idea about the real Buddha's proportions, Bernardo Bertolucci made a film entitled "Little Buddha" and cast... I kid you not... Keanu Reeves.

reply

Thank you for the reply sir/madam. Gauthama Buddha is neither very slim nor fat. He was only sime for a period of time whence he was fasting to attain the truth of 'sansara'. he gave up that way and finally found the way through meditation.

"Gautuma Buddha"?

You mean "Siddhāṛtha Gautama"?

Saying 'Gautuma Buddha' is just as insulting as describing the individual in question as someone fat. He wasn't either of those things.

reply

It seems to be more just retarded and uninformed, diluting jokes about Buddhism down to the obvious "Buddha is fat" and just that it's not a normal thing to wear those clothes.

"Oh, my God. Bear is driving! How can that be?!"

reply

It's actually pretty funny how uninformed the film was. I doubt anyone who regards themselves as buddhists could be insulted by something that silly. Take for example this article here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_common_misconceptions#Buddhism
You can find both those misconceptions in the movie. So it's actually more about basing the jokes on the common perception of what buddhism is, rather than trying to make fun of real buddhism. But hey, that's what works best in mass comedies, right?

Thank you sire. I myself am a buddhist(Theravada). since it'z a comedy i don't take much in as sentiments. Nobody is trying to stereotype monks as depicted in the movie I hope. Because a buddhist monk would be last person you would expect to take offense.

As a Buddhist, I can say no. As far as religions go, Buddhism is pretty laid back as far as talking criticism. The only thing offensive is how ignorant the film makers were. To have. Your character make fun of the Buddha being "fat" is one thing. But to have your character who is supposed to be a monk take offense at him making fun of his "god" is just lazy. But by this time the movie had already fallen apart, like all Adam Sandler movies do. Usually before the opening credits.

Thanks you sir! well said!

I found the scene with the man in drag to be an unnecessary attack and extremely poor portrayal of transgender people and similar lifestyles, though it could be argued that the person wasnt transgender its still stupid and cheap attempt at humor. It wasn't funny and also the fact that Sandler's character says Shemale, a very offensive term outside of porn. The scene with the two girls making out was another cheap attempt at humor. The whole movie is.
