7.8????

How can this movie be so low to be at 7.8? I deserves to at least be in the top 250. Who agrees with me, but also who disagrees with me and why? I won't attack you, I'm just looking for alternate opinions.

I agree it should be in the 8 range... but look at the idiots who rate good movies at a 1. I mean "The Godfather" has 7948 morons who voted 1. That's absurd. 3393 complete retards voted 1 for Shindler's List. So even though I find that American Splendor should be higher... thik of all the losers who voted 1 on this movie that kept it from happening.

I'd give it an 8

I absolutely agree!!! I was just about to start a chain this am about why is this film not in the top 250 and Sideways is. Sure, Sideways is good, but I believe Am. Splendor is not in the top 250 because it didn't reach nearly as many people as Sideways did... *sigh* :-(

I really loved this movie and it made me appreciate Pekar and Paul Giamatti all the more :-)

Well, the rate system for this site is really weired I noticed. All the good movies get a 7 most of the time. If it gets a 7, that means it is great, anything lower is merely okay. BTW I thought the movie was great and all. It was worth watching, but to me it did'nt completely stand out. It was not so evident as to what the theme and lesson was. I also began to lose interest in the characters as they progressed. The nerd was funny in the begining but got boring later on.

I can understand people not liking or preferring the type of movie Sideways is, but when someone says it's "extremely over-rated piece of crap" and "disgustingly horrible" (and they're not exaggerating), it just makes you sound narrow-minded and unappreciative of good movies. Hey, you probably are intelligent and have a decent taste in movies, and I know it's all opinions anyway so you probably couldn't care less, but I just thought I'd point out how you come off sounding.

Ironically, this isn't even ironic at all.

Y'know, we all have our tastes. Some people might have rated American Splendor a "1" by accident, but others might have honestly found it to be the worst film of all time. Who's to say? I thought the acting was brilliant, especially since we could see the actual people who were being portrayed.

To me it seemed like a very good film, but I'm not sure it should be among the top 250 of all the thousands (tens of thousands? hundreds of thousands?) of films that have ever been made.

Actually, I wonder if there isn't some incredible -- like "amazing beyond description" -- film out there that has been made but never distributed. From what I've heard and seen of the politics of the film industry, it wouldn't surprise me.

Well, I enjoyed American Splendor and am glad that it has been well received.

reply

It should be rated much higher, but I never take these IMDB ratings seriously anyway.

I just saw where Rotten Tomatoes has it at #2 on Comix Worst to Best.
I would agree. It was so refreshing.

Hope this link works...

I think it deserves a 6. Sure its well made and acted, but its just not that interesting. Why should I care about the depressing life of a weirdo who I had never heard of before? He's not that likeable, and I don't think there is anything universal about his struggles.

7.8 isn't low. I thought "7.8???" was going to be a question of why it was that high. It's better than average but not among the best movies of all time. The movies I've rated 8+ have been mesmerizing and/or perspective-changing, not just well done in their genre.

Actually, I don't have any idea how I ended up with this one on my Netflix list. I'm not a fan of comics or Giamatti, and have never heard of Pekar, so it seems completely random.

A 7.8 rating is excellent... like someone above pointed out:

"All the good movies get a 7 most of the time. If it gets a 7, that means it is great, anything lower is merely okay."

There are many movies that I love that are only rated 7. Also, even if my favorite movie af all time was rated 7 on here, who cares?
