I love American Splendor, but my absolute favorite comic series of all time is The Sandman. I'm also into the work of Daniel Clowes...(Ghost World and David Boring are a couple of his more accessible titles) Have you checked out some of Scott McCloud's stuff? His book, Understanding Comics is wonderful.

Sorry to say I'm not so much into American comics. I do like Transmetropolitan a lot, though. I've been thinking of checking out American Splendor. I just saw the movie and it was pretty good.
