where was the comedy??

maybe missed it in translation/sub-titles. the movie had no depth, no story and the ending no meaning. the only part i liked was the chemistry between the actor and the director, that was the only interesting part.

all the movies this director makes, suck! they have no interesting, story, dialog, actors and feeling. If you thought Fat Girl was pointless than you'll really want to catch this one (not.)

Well, reading the title and what it's about, having just finished watching it, and seeing it's from France (a European country) I came to 2 conclusions:
1. The fact that you got an actor and actress who hate each other yet must *beep* on camera (and sex is like tango, it takes 2 to dance and these 2 sure don't want to with each other) is funny; I'm guessing it has happened in many porn films as well as mainstream or indy flicks that require 2 actors (male/female, female/female, male/male, etc) to do so.
2. Europeans have this thing to say a country (the U.S.) is so up-tight about sex (like Europe can get up-tight about violence like Canada, which I know in response someone European or else-where will say no on them being anal about violence as an American would say no on being anal on sex or whatever since there are all types that would answer pro or con on both sides) and how I seen the arguments (in iMDB.com) on other foreign films involving sex as the man subject/topic that I guess the comedy maybe that to the Frence and other countries would get the joke/comedy of it while in turn someone in America (with not a big expansion on other tastes of what comnedy could be to others in other countries due to 'open views') would say something like "where was the comedy??" and so on.

As for the comedy part... It's kind of a mistranslation on the part of the filmmakers. Comédie, in French, doesn't mean comedy. A comédien is an actor, not a comedian. It's closer to Drama as an umbrella term, really. Drama doesn't have to be dramatic. In French, it's Comédie that's not necessarily comic.

Hope that cleared things up.

This is a movie about sex. As most of her films are. It's a huge part of life, so why not? As opposed to some of her other films, this is more autobiographical. Anyone who's seen A ma soeur (Fat Girl) will recognize some scenes and the Actress. It's about the difficulty of filming two people who hate each other in an intimate setting. Basically, how do you direct two people to have sex on camera if they hate each other?

And even if you hated the film, you have to admit that the final scene, where the two actors finally get it right, is a remarkable feat of acting.

Jesus, go back to high school English class. That last sentence has to be the longest run-on godawful mess I've ever attempted to read in my life. What a mess. You sound like a retard.

I feel the American movie channels showing this movie (e.g. Showtime, Starz) mischaracterize this movie in the guide. It's listed as a "Comedy-Drama" and described with terms like "light side" and "funny comedy"; yet, this movie is a very heavy drama by my standards. There's a bit of comedy as almost all dramas contain a few laughs, but most of the "comedy" is the "ha, isn't that ironic" type, not the "laugh out loud" or "roll on the floor" type. The only time I chuckled was the two scenes with the fake penis, and I'm not sure if that's because they were really funny or if I'm just infantile.

I actually liked this movie more than most people, but mainly because the final scene is very, very powerful and redeems the movie for me. However, do not watch this movie expecting laughs.

You just can't hold him very long...

I agree 100% with you, sarahllsjones.

I finally saw this film the other night after it had languished on my DVR for nearly a year. Watching it made me realize why I don't go out of my way to see French films.

As a comedy or otherwise, I think this film is pretty feh.

I did like the verbal sparring between the director and actor, but even that became a bit tiring after a while. The most impressive thing in the film was the guy's fake penis. (Speaking of which, if he was soft underneath it, then how the hell could they have gotten it to stand straight out as it was??? But, I digress...)

reply

Hmmm...dunno how they could have gotten it up straight. Sympho....why dont you ask your boyfriend to try it on when he is givin it to you from the back the next time both of you are at it?

reply

No that's ok, I'm the top in the relationship, but thanks for playing!

reply

Whaaaaat? There's plenty of great french films. Go out of your way to see them!

What's funny about this movie? Everything! This movie is a gag, a spoof, a send-up of obscure, self-important directors, whiny, immature actors, the whole film-making process. I can't for the life of me understand how anyone can take seriously the unending stream of absurd pedantry coming from Jeanne. Breillat is clearly poking fun at herself and having a great time doing it.

It's witty, especially when the director says " shhh, talking is the ultimate chastity belt"..lol

That line cracks me up every time I watch this. :)

I think it's a translation mistake in the title. Comédie doesn't mean comedy, it means acting. (Not litteraly, but that's the easiest way to translate)

that makes sense. thanks for clarifying.
