What year was this taking place in?

I just caught part of this today, was pretty good. I noticed that one of Dick's flashbacks was to being a kid in 1964, so is this set roughly in the early 80's? I didn't get to see the whole thing. But I was like "HEY, that's Lowell from Wings!"

I never really thought of it, but I guess it would be in the 80's: the anwering machine, the Lincoln Continental, the Van Halen. Even when they are all sitting in the magic forest and Dick ask Oldman what it was like 40 years ago and he starts talking about the 1940's. So there you go...

"They did that, and it worked."

I think the envelope they found the map in was from 1970. They said that was 18 years ago, so 1988. But, very little else about the film seemed like it was set in 1988.

I deduced that it was supposed to be set in 1988 too. There were some aspects of the movie that looked it, but I agree they didn't do the most thorough job of making it look as authentic as possible, and I assume it's because they had a limited budget. For one thing, the girls' hairstyles looked much more 2003 (the year the film was made) than 1988.
