Confused about the Strogg

So the Strogg are this alien race which minces up our soldiers and turns them into biomechanical nightmares, right? However, all you ever see in the game are the half-human biodroids. What are the actual Strogg aliens? I don't remember ever catching a glimpse of them. All we see is their work, their creations born of our flesh and their technology. They wouldn't have had access to humans until they started attacking us. Plus, haven't the Strogg conquered any other worlds? Where are the half-machine half-alien critters? I'd really like to know more on the root race that started all of this.

Thats a good question. I think that some of the enemies in Quake II arn't human. The Engineires (i can't spell it!!) are giant brains in floating barrels, The Tanks look like they are 100% machine. The Icarus don't look human at least. But this is just my opinion.

reply

I forgot about the engineers. It would make sense if they were the masterminds, even though they're easy to kill. I suppose the Brains look nearly 100% machine as well... and the Makron is kind of just a brain with guns for appendages.

Still, it seems as though the Strogg's population is mostly made of bio-undead humans. I wonder what the first wave that attcked earth was made out of...?

reply

maybe there was humans on Strogg's planet before

it's my idea.. tell me what you think about it.

;)

reply

They probobly took whatever they found on earth back to stroggos.

reply

The race is so old that the oringal died off and only the machines where left

Maybe they figure the best way to fight a war with humans is to use 'enhanced' humans. On other planets they'd do the same?

reply

The tanks aren't 100% machine, because in Quake 2 when you kill them their arm falls off and there is blood on the stump :p

reply

I would imagine the original Strogg race consists of cyborgs aliens, but since their discovery of Earth they found humans much more compatible with their technology and decided to conquer Earth to breed an entire race of human-cyborg relations, aka C-3PO...

Errm... Anyway, aren't we fighting on Strogg home planet already? It seems humans are much better at warfare than the Strogg... Afterall, we killed the ID4 aliens, the WoTW aliens, the EWTTK aliens... Heck, even Tim Allen killed a bunch of aliens with his acting...

Why else do you think no aliens have made contact with us? They're all running away in fear!!!

My question: What is the intent behind this whole qonquering and slaughter?

I mean most of these freaks just attack cause they were built and forced to...BUT look at the Q4 Mackron...he laughes(cheaply :p ) and seems to be the root of all evil so to speak...but the intentions aren`t cleared...well i guess the answer to my question will come about when Q4: expansion or Q5 comes out...wich won`t be very far from now considering the cheap and uber-predictable ending of Q4...

Personaly i think Q4 to be rather dissapointing when compared to Q2.

Berserkers, Gladiators, Gunners, Iron Maiden, Scientists (Q4), Tanks, Enforcers (Q2), Icaruses (Q2), Medics (Q2) are all "made" out of non-humans and probably from the original Strogg aliens.

Stroggified Marines, Tactical Transfers (Q4) and Guards (Q2) are "made" out of Earth humans. The differences are more apparent in Q2 where all the strogg-cyborgs shared some facial features and were a lot taller than the human-cyborgs.

I recall while playing that there was a reference to the Strogg being a disused army of super soldiers created by another race. I assume that after their creators abandoned them they were able to operate independently and act as any other race would; to further the existence of its species.

This wikipedia article offers some excellent information on the Strogg: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strogg

reply

If the orignal Quake has any connection to Quake 2 and 4, it could be said that those folks are the strogg.

And so...

Quake 2 (where the strogg originated) pre-dates "Virus" by over two years. It would be safer to say that "Virus" borrows heavily from Quake 2. Though it could be just as easily said that both borrow from the Star Trek style Borg, and they borrow still from a rich science fiction tradition of blending the line between man and machine.

reply

Quake has no relation to Quake 2/4. Quake 2 was designed as an independent game but legal troubles kept the designers from securing a name they wanted. They eventually gave up and decided to market it as an indirect sequel in an already successful franchise.

The name is all they have in common.

reply

well if you go up to one of the soliders on the hannibal, he actually informs you that there is a rumour that the strogg are actual Super Soldiers from an Ancient Battle in a Distant Galaxy.if u want to see this convo you have to talk to the marines on the first time on the hannibal

reply

The "real" Strogg have never been shown, at least not expressly.

Quake 2 is the first instance of the Strogg, where they attack Earth intent on taking it over, not because of wanting to kill humans, but because they see it as a tactical location that can be used to launch invasions on many other solar systems.

The Strogg were a biological species from an industrialized society who added machines to their bodies, much like we do today (replacement limbs, pacemakers, etc). As their technology advanced and their world was destroyed by their own industries they attacked other worlds to secure more and more resources. As time went on they became more and more dependent on technology, and the fusing of Strogg and machine became commonplace, especially since modified soldiers proved to fight better than non-modified soldiers. Using other species for additional soldiers became an easy way to increase the sizes of their armies, and continue to fight for more resources.

There has been no explanation of Strogg "civilian" life. We don't even know if there are any civilians. From the games all we've seen are Strogg who fight and strogg who maintain the equipment they use to survive. Playing through Quake 4 you see a wide range of creatures used not only as soldiers, but also one creature which proves to be the lynch pin in their "food supply", just another example of how they make use of different species.

Keep in mind, even species that look human may not be. It is entirely possible that the Star Trek view of Aliens all having the same basic structure as humans is possible. Lots of the creatures we see in Quake 2 and 4 are human looking, but WAY too large to actually BE humans.

Like the Stroyent Processing Creature.
But, is't it possible to .. uh, blow a human up to those sizes?

I looked this very thing up on Wikipedia.org a while back. And the main theory is that the Strogg are kinda like the Borg from Star Trek. The original race no longer exists per se, instead they us other lifeforms to populate their race, and to power their machines and entire society basically. Thats why they need humans, and all other life, not just to add us to their population, but to use the energy in our bodies for their machines, kind of like the machines in the Matrix.

But the main thing I'm saying is that the original Strogg are nonexistant, thats why theyre never seen.

reply

Theoretically, if one wanted to connect these games to the first Quake, perhaps the Strogg worshipped Shub-Niggurath, which is why there were some cybernetic humans in the game.

reply

But no one would connect the games to the first one, because as ahs been stated by the makers of the games, the name Quake is only used because of marketing. I bet if they thought that Strogg Wars would work, they maty have chosen that.
