About the movie

Other than the fact that this film was written and directed by Sophie Marceau, there appears to be very little describing the movie itself.

The film, one could say, is typically French. It begins in the middle, moves slowly and ends in the middle. There is no neat, tidy bow to wrap around a definitive conclusion. It's about a couple who seem to be growing apart in their marriage.

It starts with two unhappy people together and ends with two unhappy people apart. In the middle, time passes.

One scene has the husband walking past a cafe filled with couples. The tables alternate between a feuding pair and a happy pair. At least fifty percent of marriages fail and this movie is about them - us, depending on one's situation.

It's very well done and it's sad, not as in need-a-tissue sad, but sad that so many relationships that begin with such flourish, die off, dwindle, dissipate.

I'm sure this is very autobiographical on the part of Ms. Marceau. The husband in the film is much older than the wife, the two actors are 21 years apart... in the opening scene, I assumed he was her father.

As this would have been in production, Sophie's own relationship to her partner of 16 years and twenty-six years her elder, was coming to an end. Living the subject matter has made a very compelling film.
