Really, the main reason MG is a great series

Don't get me wrong, the first MG is a great story too, but the story in MG2:SS is what catapulted it into such a complex series. It had the most 3-dimensional characters that a game had ever had. From building upon that, the MGS titles would be the best in storytelling. Sure, some things got retconned like Big Boss being Snake's father and the patriot story period (but Kojima is a mad genius, and he pulled it off) but the complexities of MGS and its sequels have this game to thank.

The Snake and Big Boss thing isn't really a retcon. 'Cause it's never specified when Big Boss told Solid Snake that he was his father. People just assume it happens at Zanzibar.

Still you're right. This game set the foundations for the rest of the series. It's a class game that's aged very well. Unlike Metal Gear.

By the way, ... is the MG2 that's included on MGS3:Sub the same exact game as this?

That's where I have MG & MG2 if its the same. I've just never played them yet.

Yeah, the ones on Subsistence are the official English versions.
