Bad Ending?

Spoiler of coarse.

The end, Manuel talked Abner not to kill the guy who tried to kill him twice. Guy shoots Abner, Abner survives and goes to shoot him but Manuel talked him out of it so he didn't shoot. End of movie guy goes to kill him for the second time, but Abner ended up with the gun and Manuel talked him down and the shooter ran away but shooting Manuel. So what happens when the shooter returns for the third time to kill Abner? Guy tries twice, who's to say he wont again and succeed? Odds are he will and be successful. Only ending I can see is that Manuel shoots the guy trying to kill Abner, preventing a third attack. Manuel liked jail didn't want to leave, hes already screwed for killing one person religious wise. This way he actually saves Abner rather than preventing the inevitable.

My take is different. Abner, now he knows who Manual actually is, what he's done and how long he spent in prison for it, will hopefully take his two close shaves with death seriously and move out of the gang culture that he was immersed in.

He now knows through his mother what it is to lose someone close to pointless violence and he doesn't want to her to lose him. Equally, through Manual, he knows that he doesn't want to spend 20+ years of his life behind bars for a meaningless tit-for-tat murder. That's too high a price to pay for street cred but now he sees that. Abner, for both his mother's sake and his own, will likely tread a different path through life.
