What is it with americans and their big idea that anything produced outside of their precious region 1/sold on eBay is automaticaly a bootleg?

If this movie is on eBay and it's any of the following editions it's legal:

Britain (region 0)
Germany (region 2)
Holland (region 2)
Hong Kong (region 0)
Japan (region 2)
Korean (region 3)

So why not suggest that they invest in an import instead?

He asked for R1 DVDs. You can't play any imports without a PAL or region free DVD player, which are ridiculously expensive. Bootlegs are the only option if you want an affordable price for a Region 1 DVD.

Region 0 discs will play on 99.9% of Region 1 (and 2 and 3 and 4 and 5 and 6 and 8) DVD players.

Firstly, most countries around the world use the NTSC standard rather than PAL.

Among these countries is Hong Kong. The Hong Kong DVD is also region 0. That means, unless the original poster are really unlucky and have an truly ancient DVD player the Hong Kong DVD will play on their region 1 DVD player.

Secondly, as region free and PAL compatable players are supposedly so expensive in the USA, maybe the original poster could hack their DVD player to either make it multi-region or temporarily change it's region? My old DVD player was region 2 but all I had to do was press menu, type in a four digit number code and then a menu offering a choice of regions 1 - 6 appeared, theres no reason to believe doing that would be any harder on their DVD player than mine.

Region-free DVD players are not ridiculously expensive. They are usually the cheapest models on the shelf. The vast majority of no-name DVD players can be made region-free by punching in a secret code on the remote. Google the model number and region-free and you should find something. Most of these players will happily convert PAL DVDs to work with NTSC TVs. Check for a "N/P" button on the remote.

The same holds true for Blu-ray players. The cheapest one available in Canada is the "Seiki" from Walmart. It can be made region-free for DVD, and the Blu-ray region can be easily changed as well.

There is one drawback to PAL DVDs; movies have to be sped up from the normal 24 fps to 25 fps.

In addition to my previous reply can I add:

What about Canadian imports? LOL

There are about 10 copies up for grabs on Ebay right now I just looked at it. Go on there Im sure you can find a regionless or NTSC copy up for grabs. I got my copy from there and its decent quality.

The only people that are against marijuanas legalization are people who havent tried it.

Actualy the company (Tartan) who did the British region 0 DVD has just gone into liquidation which means that the UK edition may itself become a "collectors item". The quality of the disc isn't A1 but is more than acceptable, I really can't see any other ('cept maybe the Japanese edition) being any better.

To be honest I make a point of never buying bootlegs (even if a movie is stupendiously rare) as almost anything is findable on VHS or even laserdisc. If that fails I can often find someone who'll trade a DVD-R or CDV-R. I'd sooner not see a movie than feel I'm funding someone/a company who ultimatly are criminal.

It's also be re-released this Tuesday. I'm not the biggest fan of the cover design, but at least it'll be a little easier to find for people.

That's pretty poor LOL. The UK DVD/VHS/Cinema poster used the same image without all the zombie nonsense superemposed behind it, which was a moderate improvment.

Here's the Hong Kong artwork:

...which is perhaps my favourite and very "Hong Kong".

I rented this movie today, at a local independent video store that specializes in "good" movies and foreign stuff. They also had Ichi The Killer and Audition, and I think some other Takashi Miike films.

I saw one on ebay for like 9.99 but some prick beat me

but now the only ones im finding on amazon and they start at from 35 to like 90 dollars and they r used and only in good condition so it's obviously a rip off

does anyone know of any sites where i can get a reasonable priced copy of the katakuris?

reply

The still in print British DVD is region 0 (ignore any sites that list it as region 2), though you'll need a PAL compatable player/TV set. Here in Europe most TVs and players are duel format, I can't however speak for your side of the pond.

Infact all the titles released by Tartan as part of their highly addictive "Asia Extreme" series (which includes m-a-n-y Takashi Miike titles) are region 0 in their UK edtions.
