The best Miike film. Period.

Now that I've seen so much Miike material, I can safely say that this is the best film he has been involved with, and that's quite an accomplishment.

It's funny, yet horrific, realistic yet surreal. It is rivaled only by Bizita Q and Ichi, in my eyes.

Just had to say it, couldn't hold back.

Although this one is certainly a very enjoyable and fresh film, Miike's best is undoubtedly "Box" from "Three Extremes". Pure cinema!

reply

Completely agree. "Box" is one of my favourite movies, because it is so flawless. "Katakuris" had some flaws that stood out... despite its best uber-hilarious moments.

reply

Yes, it is but they are so different from each other. Same director, I know, but completely different source material.

Katakuris is the best of its type that I have seen. Not saying it is THE best. Just from the films I have seen.

Audition is also one of the best of its type.

I think Visitor Q and IZO are his best. oh and Dead OR Alive 2 comes really close

Izo is the only films of the 30 of his I have seen where I felt like I wasted my time.

reply

YES!!! Katakuris and Visitor Q are the best.

reply

I was just thinking bout how Katakuris and Visitor Q are the two sides of family. One positively dysfunctional, one negatively dysfunctional, but you have to love both.

reply

Audtion - Visitor Q - Dead Or Alive - Gozu - Masters Of Horror and this are of all very similar high quality Miike style. With this I believe there is a slight issue with production but saying that it was done quickly for a film of this nature and the casting was very adapt. I particularly enjoyed Grandpa's stick antics and admired the family concept more than other Miike films. A classic which is up there with much more over hyped films ie Shaun Of Dead.

I thought Audition was my favorite Miike movie, until I saw this. The faux-British guy was hilarious, right down to his "foreign" accent.

reply

This film is one of his best pieces of work, whenever im feeling down i stick this on and im instantly happy. Next to this is Audition.
Visitor Q sucks.

reply

i'ma watch this. but as someone mentioned, IZO is absolutely amazing.

reply

1. Audition
2. Gozu
3. Rainy Dog/Rekka Outlaw
4. Happiness
5. Blues Harp/Bird People Of China

Those are my personal 5 favorites. I also loved Dead or Alive2, Ichi, Yakuza Demon, Imprint, Visitor Q and the whole Black Society Triad trilogy.

Actually, come to think of it.. i have seen over 40 Miike movies and the only two i didnt like where Andromedia and Sliver/Silver!

reply

You are the only person who has probably seen more than me, I am up to 30 or so, but all of them have been in the theater. You mention 4 in your Top 5 (7) that I haven't seen, so hopefully one day they will play in theaters here!

This is one of my favorite Miike's films for sure.
