Grandpa in the ending (Spoiler)

So, I've seen this movie 3 times and there's one thing I can't figure out. When the house is sliding down the mountain and the movie is in claymation mode, someone says "Grandpa's gone" and you see Grandpa's clay eyes glaze over and his spirit leave. When they get down the mountain, though, Grandpa is alive and the narrator/little girl says he died a year later. What is this supposed to mean?

I think it was supposed to be a near death experience of some sort.

It's him having a near death experience. You see his soul fly out of his body, and then come back in (it cuts before it touches him, but you see it reverse). The whole volcano thing was really messed up, anyway. how did the dad rescue the dog from the lava (was it lava?) when in the next scene there's no lava whatsoever. The claymation scenes (all of them) are just pure madness.

reply

It's a mudslide, not lava.
