i went to the premiere of this film in melbourne in 2003. at first i thought, oh this is a charming, simple film, then half way through after the you know what, i thought what the hell is going on!!! it turned bad so quickly, in an overtly cliche way. i wasn't alone here, with people in the cinema getting up and leaving.
shareyeah, i thought it could have been really great but fell short.
unless they were telling a true story (i dont think they were), i don't see the point of having him die suddenly like that.
I think it could have been much better film overall to see how they dealt with parting and going back to their normal lives when they got back from the desert.
You can say a lot about "Japanese Story", but cliche is not one of them.
