So? Isn't this a magic land where everything can -and does- happen? Why would it be so outlandish to believe the idea that his dead father is still walking around to help?
Because his father is, um, dead?

Unless you have a Horcrux. Then you're worse than dead.
I think the point being made here is they live in a school ful of ghosts, so it wouldn't have been completely out of the question for this to have been a ghost of James Potter.

In the books. Nick said you have to plan to become a ghost. Most of the trio's and Nick's interactions were ommited from the movies.
