I helped work on the publicity for the film and as far as I know they were saying sometime in Oct. Sorry I can't be more specific.

hi AJ! hi zhak! thanks for plugging my board. :-D ( http://pub120.ezboard.com/bbiffstuff ) we've been getting lots of new TMBG fans lately. woo!

i can barely wait for the DVD. i preordered it from amazon (where it's only like $17 something) i ordered the Direct From Brooklyn DVD too. i already have the VHS, but i wanted the extras. i got the free shipping, so it'll probably take a little longer to arrive, but i'm a cheapskate. hehe.

i live in a tiny town in Arkansas, so needless to say, Gigantic never played around here. i did see the 30 minute thing on ABC on that show after Nightline though. i was all veklempt through the whole thing.

i love They Might Be Giants with the white hot intensity of a thousand suns!

i miss you, zhak. come on over & see me sometime. ;-)

Oh, my goodness, where to begin describing all the extras on this thing?? Well, having sorted through everything but the audio commentary tracks on the film and on the deleted scenes, I must say first of all that I highly recommend everything under "music videos" -- the 3 Brave New World videos are hilarious and indicative of the Johns' ability to write songs about practically anything, and the 5 Adam Bernstein-directed videos, with new introductions by the Johns and Bernstein, are certainly worth a look even if you've already watched TMBG's Direct From Brooklyn DVD and listened to the Johns' audio commentary on it. The two deleted scenes -- one dealing more extensively with the Johns' school days, the other telling us about how the Johns' then-label Elektra originally wanted Elvis Costello to produce the Apollo 18 album -- would have thrown off the pacing of the film, but are fascinating in and of themselves. The 3 extra TMBG performances from the Polish National Home are excellent, especially the cracked masterpiece "Fingertips."

I recommend just about everything under "bonus materials": The full performance of "Birdhouse in Your Soul" from the Tonight Show, the screamingly funny promo video for the Flood album, the 2 Joy Farm performances from the mid-'80s ("Hide Away Folk Family" and "Mr. Me"), the Johns' appearance on Nick Rocks! (adorable), 2 songs from the Johns' in-store performance the night before 9/11 ("Boat of Car" and "Meet James Ensor"), the original version of "New York City" by Cub, a segment from NPR's This American Life on the Johns and dial-a-song, a spoken-word skit by Flansburgh called "Flansy Stays in the Picture" (which can be accessed by clicking on the little picture of him talking on the phone), Michael McKean's dramatic reading of "I Palindrome I," and more funny stuff from the "fan room." These, along with the videos, the deleted scenes, and the extra live performances, are certainly worthy (or at least entertaining) supplements to the film.

The "raw footage and interviews" stuff is mostly hit-or-miss. However, the additional performances of "Dr. Worm" (a sound-check with the Band of Dans) and "Cowtown" (a radio-show performance with just the Johns) are priceless; and I really liked the funny and charming exchange between Flansburgh and his wife Robin ("Papa's Got a Brand-New Belt"), and Linnell's amusing story involving a bunch of Philly cheesesteaks and a car full of girls ("Groupies Love Cheese Steak Sandwiches"). To a lesser extent, I also enjoyed "Mexican Wrestling Masks" (a discussion between the Johns and Conan O'Brien about Slipknot and other "bands with masks") and "Full House Every Night" (Flansburgh introducing the band during a concert).
