9/11/01 Concert

You may have noticed that John and John's personal appearances in the movie (WLIR, "The Daily Show" et al.) take place in September, 2001. Then towards the end of the film they play an in-store concert at Tower Records in the East Village at midnight on September 11, 2001. This really gave me the chills. Imagine: all those people were in the store enjoying John and John's music, and not one could have suspected that in less than nine hours, just about one mile south, the world would be turned upside down and over 2,000 souls would lose their lives.

Why did you post this in so many different message boards? It's not that big a deal that you realized this. Most that have seen the movie since it first came out four years ago has noticed.

And as I replued where you posted this on Flansburg's message board this is all discussed by the band and the director in the commentary during that scene.

I was one of the people at that in-store, actually. John and John signed the new cd and a promotional poster. And since I was only visiting New York and feeling pretty touristy, I asked them to sign it with the date and "NYC". I remember John Flansburgh asked me what the date was and me having to think about it for a second. Eventually, I said "Well, technically I think it's the 11th already, but put the 10th if you want." (it was after midnight by then) He dated it 9/10/01.

It's strange remembering that date and time as being so insignifigant that we weren't even really sure what day it was.

Another detail I remember was speaking with people before the instore performance and asking them if they had any recommendations for me... Things I shouldn't miss before leaving New York. I was told that I should check out a music venue called "Wetlands" that was closing forever in a couple days. Of course, none of us new that the the World Trade Center was about to be gone forever as well.

I was fortunate to be able to see the towers that night, shortly after 1 am, a mere 8 hours or so before they fell.

Anyway, that autographed poster is now framed in my apartment.

A lot of strange things happen in this world. Things you don't know about in Grand Rapids.

Now, that's what I call an intelligent, sensitive post. Thank you for it, hollywoodpsychic.
