Obviously inspired by cult classics 'From Dusk Till Dawn' and 'Vampires'

I don't know why no one hasn't mentioned this because it's quite evident... it's all about the crew that's killing the vampires and both films are more action films than typical horrors... exactly like this film, don't you think. Tsui Hark probably liked those films very much at that time, that he made his own version or a strange combination of those films, in other words, an incredibly big mess.

You do know that there is more stories about Vampire Hunters then just two american movies? And there is more vampire stories and hunter legends in china than in europe?

This guy has NO clue whatsoever as movies like this one were released YEARS before "From..., etc...So if you want to do the "he got his ideas from this or that", then you better say that otehrs got their ideas from the "originals"...'nuff said...

Still, it's a good point to compare these. From Dusk Till Dawn has obviously been influenced by the genre/tradition this movie represents.
Vampires... propably too, but somehow it doesn't feel that similar in style to me.

btw does anyone know what would be a really original movie here; the oldest movie/s of this genre?

reply

Oldest, I don't know. But my favorites would be the Mr. Vampire series from the 80s.

Just watched the Hark-produced movie and saw this (3 year old) post. Being that there is no statute of limitations on ignorance I thought I'd take a moment to point out the O.P.'s obvious ethnocentrism. Though maybe innocently founded in this case, it's still a little unnerving. Vampire Hunters is by no means a classic but it is obviously influenced by some very important Asian films that exist as almost a genre unto themselves. I think its a discredit to the films that Vampire Hunters strives to emulates to make connections to two ridiculous American films with only the basest ties (ie: vampires) to subject matter. I don't know why no one has pointed out the connection between some great Western-produced films with 'guys fighting' that have so obviously influened this one, or better yet, films taking place 'in dark locations'.
Seriously though, Western and Eastern vampire genre conventions are quite unique and although I do not doubt that many borrow from each other on many accounts, Vampire Hunters is most certainly 'Eastern' in its execution, universal concepts aside.

Well Vampire Lovers from 1970, and Captain Kronos - Vampire Hunter from 1974, both movies featured vampire hunters. Surprisingly they've never been re-made.

I find that this movie is a mediocre film, but at least it's decent and not horrible. I did not see some influence from those two movies though.

Since it looks like you're replying to me, where did I say that the two movies i mentioned influenced this film?

I clearly stated those two films had never been remade, although the film with Susan Sarandon, Catherine Deneuve and David Bowie did involve a lesbian affair similar to the film Vampire Lovers although the lesbianism was played down in the film, but is much more graphic in the story.

As for Captain Kronos, Blade, and Buffy were similar in theme by using a vampire hunter or slayer to go after vampires, Captain Kronos unlike Blade and Buffy had no super power, just superior fighting skills and a side kick.

We assume that we exist, and there is reality, and that the matter of which we are made is real.

You must have watched another movie then me, story of Tsui Hark's Vampire Hunters comes nowhere near those two mentioned before. Oh wait they do ... they both have vampires in them ...
