We agree, Danny. The typical Sayles film runs about 2.5 hours & this one was barely 90 minutes. Therefore more like a novella than a full-blow epic. Both the situation and the cast were terrific, but the character depth was a bit light. He's kind of in a no win situation: those of us who love his work wait with baited breath for each new release, but the other folks don't want to invest the mental work required to reap the rewards. To the people dissing SUNSHINE STATE, try again. I saw it twice in theaters & recently again on cable. It gets better every time I watch it!

Sidenote: RB's favorite is LONE STAR. My favorite is MATEWAN. For an excerpt from an excellent article on MATEWAN by famed historian Eric Foner, check the "Features" section of our website.

I thougt it was great. It was really a fresh perspective on an issue i never really have paid much attention to. Most all there was this one moment really stuck in my mind. I don't want to spoil it, but there is this scene between Susan Lynch and Vanessa martinez that blew me away. I wish the rest of the film had more moments like it. Over all it was surely worth watching.

I got to see a screening about a month ago, and I really enjoyed the film. I haven't seen too many of his films, but Lone Star is one of my favorite movies, so I was pretty exicted about seeing this one. Obviously, this is a very different movie than Lonestar, but still, awesome acting, some really nice photography, and a great story/concept. The whole "adopting between cultures" idea is very complicated and I think Sayles does a good job on giving you a whole bunch of different viewpoints on the topic. Good movie!

I didn't like it at all. I like John Sayles, but not when he gets preachy and heavy-handed about some social, political, or economic issue, as he does here. Stick to telling stories about interesting characters and places, John, and leave the "issues" to 60 Minutes and Dateline.

??? Indeed. Marvelous title for this thread.
Not only did I want to know more at the end, but throughout the entire film. Perhaps knowledge of the baby market was presupposed, but I was confused throughout the movie, on a number of levels.
Was this movie originally staged as a play? I thought it incredibly slow-moving.
